Informative but repetitive

This book is suitable for the dire-hard Vincent fan. It is quite a difficult read and repeats so much as to make the book a tad boring. The author asserts a different Vincent than the 'myth' we have been fed, for example that he was not poor yet when Vincent lived in The Hague with Sien and her children, a major problem for them was abject poverty. The author asserts Vincent read and read a lot which is true but the author claims Vincent only used the books to find what he already agreed with and to use it as an argument in his many letters, particularly to Theo. I have many books on and about Vincent. This is not one I would recommend. I find reading Vincents 6 volume Letters the best purchase ever and with that, nothing needs to be added and no thesis needs to be written about. What we do know is Vincent was a difficult man, volatile yet thoughful, zealous, troubled, so tragically lonely ( I would gladly be his lover) and a genius, his mind amazing, a true artist and more.

Powerful devotional poetry.

If you are at home in bhakti, and you have a warm heart for the Goddess Kali, and you also love poetry, then this book may well be very welcome for you.

The texts in this book are 'in between' poems, songs and prayers, and were originally written by Ramprasad in 18th-century Bengal.
Lex Hixon did a good job and put these poems freely into clear, modern English.
It is clear Lex Hixon is familiar with the basic experiences of Ramprasad and there is clarity and power (sakti) shining through the lines.

Ramprasad was a sakta (primarily devoted to the Goddess, Devi) and his work was a source of inspiration for Ramakrishna, who lived about a century later. (Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna)
In Saktism the Mother-Goddess (Devi) is seen as the highest deity, also as Sakti (sort of 'cosmic energy personified').
Devi is known in many forms (like Durga, Kali, Parvati) and has a strong ambivalent character: benevolent and frightening, creating-preserving-destroying. (Devi: The Mother Goddess - An Introduction and Hindu Goddesses: Visions of the Divine Feminine in the Hindu Religious Tradition (Hermeneutics: Studies in the History of Religions))

In these poems the power and energy, the character and atmosphere of Ma Kali comes to the fore very well: dynamic, ambivalent, unbound, awe-inspiring, a-rational, untamable; at times fierce, turbulent, fiery, unpredictable, overwhelming, effective.

You have to like this kind of poems, but if you do so, then most poems in this book will be great and it will inspire in a pleasing and effective way.

Rivalling the Gita

This book has surpassed the Bhagavad Gita as my most treasured book-type companion on the journey. It is a collection of beautifully, brilliantly, grittily translated poems of Ram Prasad, although Hixon probably improvised somewhat working from the authority of his own expanded consciousness. So the voice, the singer of these love songs to God, is perhaps a magnificent sum of two great, great souls. At any rate, each poem takes me straight into my own experience (it really resonates) and then stretches my paradigms and then finally casts the stunning light of non-dualistic wisdom within. So sometimes I feel like I have traveled through a whole lifetime of spiritual growth from reading one poem! Each one fans the fires of my longing for closeness to the Divine while never glossing over the reality of our foibles and intractable paths of the mind and ego. The book is a day-to-day manual on how to live in a body on earth from the very heart of the Vedas, from the perspective of absolute surrender and rapture in the Mother of the Universe. I read at least one poem every morning as my spiritual nutrition and it frames how I step into the day. I couldn't recommend this book highly enough.

Inspirational, Ecstatic, Devotional Poetry

This is one of the most inspirational collections of devotional poetry I have ever read. Lex Hixon does an excellent job of expressing the essence of Yoga philosophy and Tantra in poetic English. The combination of the ecstatic musings of the 19th century Bengali poet, Ramprasad and the modern lively English of Lex Hixon has created a masterpiece. I would recommend this book to all interested in the devotional experience of Tantra as well as the Vedanta philosophy. The beauty of the book is that you need not be a scholar to experience the mystical vision of Tantra Yoga.

Must have if you are doing or planning on implementing Readers' Workshop. I am a literacy coach and would highly recommend this book. It will get you set up and take you through step by step how to begin and maintain a workshop approach to reading. LOVE IT!!!! Don't hesitate to buy. Tremendous guide.

I like how this book is set up - a step-by-step guide to setting up and running readers workshop. I just wish there was a bit more - Laura Candler has SO MUCH good stuff on teaching reading (and everything else!) it would have been nice if she had included more of her great comprehension lessons and how to use them in a readers workshop setting...still, I'm glad I bought the book.

I loved this book! It had a lot of detail about all three players talents and I never got bored while reading it! I recommend this book to anyone who thinks that Messi, Neymar, and Ronaldo are the three best soccer players in the world!
