About the Author
Born Arthur Henry Ward in 1883, Sax Rohmer was four years old when Sherlock Holmes appeared in print. A journalist, poet, comedy sketch writer, and songwriter, he turned to fiction, and the first Fu-Manchu story, The Zayat Kiss, appeared in The Story-Teller magazine in October, 1912. That story became the beginning of the novel The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu, and fourteen more followed, making Rohmer one of the most successful novelists of the 1920s and 1930s. Fu-Manchu has been featured in radio, television, comic strips, and comic books. In film he has been portrayed by such actors as Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, John Carradine, Peter Sellers, and Nicolas Cage. Rohmer died in 1959, a victim of an outbreak of the type A influenza known as the Asian flu.

Love, Fever and a Marmoset in the south of France

This is the sixth Fu Manchu novel, set in the mid 1930's, and provides us with yet another protagonist, the American-Scots Alan Sterling (although Dr Petrie and Nayland Smith remain present). Once again we have leaped a few years on from the previous novel (the Mask of Fu Manchu), although this leads directly into The Trail of Fu Manchu.

The short version of this review is more of the same, but largely set in a single house in the south of France, rather than London or Cairo. We have a young hero who falls in love with a pretty girl (Fleurette), another pretty girl who seeks to betray Fu Manchu for her own purposes (Fah Lo Suee), the Doctor himself, as inscrutably devious as ever, and a menagerie of plagues, giant spiders, worm-men and brainwashed (and therefore mad) scientists. When I think about it, Fu Manchu is pretty much somewhere between weird tale and science fiction now: we have the secret of immortal life (both human, and apparently, marmoset), telepathy, and also all kinds of scientific wonders. Mind you, none of that noticeably impedes the speed of the story. I suppose it does not make a lot of sense at times, but you don’t get time to ask those questions while caught up in the telling of the tale.

The story ends on a final cliffhanger, but one which we can enjoy having had some closure from the adventures to hand. And having read Trail of Fu Manchu, I can say that its great fun too.

It's a hoot !

Great style, interesting characters, and the reader can see this master's influence on suspense and mystery writing. It's been broadly copied. On the whole the book is simply quite a bit of literary fun, nothing heavy, depressing, life changing, etc., just an old fashioned enjoyable page turner.

There is a theory that the 1918 flu pandemic which lasted from January 1918 all the way through to December 1920 was man-made and one of the first attempts at global biological terrorism. Sax Rohmer published "The Bride of Fu-Manchu" in 1932 so he was well aware of the flu pandemic and the possible conspiracy theory behind it and he used it brilliantly in this story. "The Bride of Fu-Manchu" is a thriller, no doubt about it. Smith and Petrie's lives are in great danger from page one and the danger grows with the body count and this time not even the good guys are immune. I think Mr. Rohmer was at the top of his craft when he wrote this adventure. And the action leaps from London to the Cote d'Azur; then to Cairo and back again. Just when you think you might know where the story is heading Mr. Rohmer tosses in another turn which you take at high-speed on two wheels. Mr. Rohmer writes in a breathless style that will keep you on the edge of your seat, flipping pages as fast as you can read them just trying to keep up with a runaway roller coaster ride story. "The Bride of Fu-Manchu" is the perfect read to get your adrenalin going and root for the good guys to conquer a menace that is almost supremely evil. This is a wild ride read and I recommend it highly. This is a high-octane series and I am so glad that Titan Books is bringing the whole series back. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I saw some good reviews on the Kindle edition

I saw some good reviews on the Kindle edition, but I have just the paperback edition. And it does not meet my needs. The reviews I read on the Kindle edition says it has a cross-reference. The paperback edition does not.

Drawings and very short descriptions, that's all you'll find in this book. No instructions on building any of the movements, no measurements, although a few of the pulley type drawings I saw did have ratios in the description.

I wanted something to help me build simple toys out of wood and cardboard, plastic and string. I wanted to be able to search for ideas like using a motor to make levers wave in different directions, but this book does not have a way of searching the drawings. It doesn't have exploded views to help you make your own. It only has drawings and short descriptions. It did not suit my needs.

I purchased 507 Mechanical Movements: Mechanisms and Devices by Henry T. Brown, to have a source of information and examples of the Mechanical Engineering device concepts to reference while using other texts and studying Mechanical Engineering in review. I know the five hundred mechanisms and devices are in drawings and illustrations, rather than digital or CAD drawings, but you can spend a lot of money purchasing CAD drawn examples of this type. Each of the mechanisms is illustrated with drawings and descriptions of how it is used. This digital edition includes an handy index to the contents also.

Excellent!

I bought this for my brilliant inventive husband and he loves this book. As he's reading, I often hear him exclaiming over the various things he has found in there, comparing them with other things he has used or read about. He loved this gift and I'm so happy! We both believe that the mechanical solution is often far better than the electronic one, and this book is an excellent resource as we move more of our lives off-grid.

Flawed masterpiece from a training genius

Yuri Verkhoshansky is to strength and conditioning what Issac Newton was to physics. If you're the typical gym rat, be prepared to have your world blown wide open. You will learn nuances about things you didn't even know existed. The amount of pure gold in this book is staggering, but it's an extremely difficult read both technically and organizationally. At times Yuri wanders, at times he talks about complicated topics as if they were obvious, and at times he labors on when his point is obvious and already well made.

I've only read it once. Now that I've read other strength and conditioning books, I will read it again. Despite the difficulties, I've learned more from struggling through Supertraining than I have learned in any other book.

I've wasted so much time doing counterproductive exercises because I didn't know the information in this book. I deeply regret not having read this 15 years earlier.

From a technical standpoint, this book provides information from both scientific studies (there's probably over a 1000 references), and from Verkhoshansky's expert opinion. The combination of two is a staggering volume of knowledge. It's a masterpiece, and it's cheap at any price.

To be fair: I'll highlight the weaknesses:

- Many of the reference are decades old
- The information is biased towards strength and power sports (Olympic weightlifting, sprinting, and high jumping)
- Good editing would make it a much easier read

A serious book for people serious about training

If you are looking for a book for a bodybuilding or strength training program then this is NOT the book for you. However is you are interested in learning more about human movement, and how physiology adapts to the stresses of training then I highly recommend this book.

Going back years the Soviets studied movement and how individuals adapt to exercise and training; this book is a thorough review of the Soviet system of training which has been proven as the most effective. We in the west focus on how we look, the Soviets were interested in movement, performance, technique and specialization which is the foundation of the Soviet system of sports classification.

As an author and speaker in the fitness industry this book is the source of many of my talks and when looking at a new training style or technique I always compare it to the Soviet system to see if it is based on principles or fads.

This book is not easy to read, but will provide the in-depth background on how to organize training to help clients and athletes make the desired adaptations.

Incredible!

WOW. This is a very deep and thorough book. I'm not sure where to begin... How about some questions:

- Can you define strength deficit?
- What's the difference between "strength-speed" and "speed-strength?"
- Distinction between central fatigue and peripheral fatigue?

The above concepts and much more were covered in only the first twenty pages. Get the picture as to the depth of this text?

I have the CSCS certification. I thought the CSCS was tough when I took the exam. But, looking back on it now and comparing it to Supertraining, the CSCS material is kinda pathetic. Cheers!

About the Author
Jonathan White is an active marine conservationist, a sailor, and a surfer. His first book, Talking on the Water: Conversations about Nature and Creativity, is a collection of interviews exploring our relationship with nature and features Gretel Ehrlich, David Brower, Ursula K. Le Guin, Gary Snyder, Peter Matthiessen, and others. White has written for the Christian Science Monitor, The Sun, Orion, Surfer’s Journal, and other publications. He holds an MFA in creative nonfiction and lives with his wife and son on a small island in Washington State.

Peter Matthiessen (May 22, 1927–April 5, 2014) was an American novelist, naturalist, wilderness writer, and CIA agent. A co-founder of the Paris Review, he was a 2008 National Book Award winner. He was also an environmental activist. His nonfiction, notably The Snow Leopard, featured nature and travel, as well as American Indian issues and history, including his study of the Leonard Peltier case, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse. His early story story "Travelin' Man" was made into the film The Young One directed by Luis Buñuel, and his novel At Play in the Fields of the Lord was made into a 1991 film. He lived in Sagaponak, New York.

TIDES is a wonderfully-engaging, entertaining, and informative book ...

TIDES is a wonderfully-engaging, entertaining, and informative book. I had been under the impression that I understood the basic nature and cause of oceanic tides, but White’s book provides a whole new level of understanding, appreciation of and deference for the role of the dynamic waters of the ocean. White describes how the movement of the planet’s oceans are extraordinarily complex, inexorable, almost mystifying and idiosyncratic to the local geography and topography. The reader of TIDES not only comes away with a rich understanding and…especially…a deep respect for the power of oceanic tides, but given White’s many engaging stories about his personal adventures while exploring the extremes of tides’ unbelievable antics around the globe, comes away with a sense that either (s)he’s been there, or…in my case…wants to go there to share in the discovery of the majesty and power of tides.

A glory of a book

This book is a treasure that can’t quite be categorized. In plain language and clear drawings, it teaches quite a lot about the tides, how they work, and why they are so much stronger and weaker at different times and at different places. Yet the book is so much more: a travel memoir of adventures to faraway places (the coast of Normandy, a river in China, an Inuit village near the Arctic Circle, to name a few) and cultural history that deepens our understanding of the scientific discoveries and, for this non-scientist reader, makes the science accessible and a pleasure to learn. And finally, the book opens into questions of energy consumption and climate change, leaving the reader pondering our human capacity to solve problems, perhaps in part through the energy of the tides.

Jonathan White has clearly gone where few of us would dare: over a river wall to await the arrival of a 25-foot wave, where he will have 10 seconds’ notice to make a climb back out that requires 7 seconds; under a thick ceiling of ice in the Arctic to gather mussels with an Inuit hunter at low tide; venturing along on a small skiff into churning waters in the Pacific Northwest. The tales he tells are gripping, wonderful to read aloud to family members. Yet the voice in which he writes is not so much that of a bold adventurer but of a humble and curious seeker. His reverence for the natural world and his wonder at the role of the tides within it will vibrate with the reader after the last paragraph has been read.

I purchased this book after hearing the author being interviewed on a NPR radio program. I was disappointed by the authors rambling writing style which left me wondering if the 5 star reviews were all from friends and relatives. The subject matter has the potential to really capture the readers attention, but left me wanting to just plod through this prose so I could pass the book on to Goodwill. Three stars is a very generous rating in my opinion. Maybe the author's contributions to surfer magazines are more entertaining? This one misses the mark.

When I was originally reading this book, I was interested in seeing how the author would speed up their code. He covers a wide variety of topics which is good, but that also hampers the book as none of the topics are covered in depth. He uses lots of small examples and shows how to profile before moving on to optimizing them. Let’s go over each of the chapters so you can get a taste of what the book covers. Full disclosure: I was a technical reviewer of the book for Packt.

Chapter one is all about profiling your code. It covers the differences between statistical and event-based profiling, what profiling is and why it’s important, bottlenecks and memory leaks. It also goes over running time complexity (linear, factorial, quadratic, etc) and profiling best practices.

Then we logically move into chapter two where we learn about some profilers we can use with Python. The two that are covered are cProfile (included with Python) and line_profiler. The author demonstrates various ways to use cProfile to measure your code and also how to use Python’s pstats module, which is used for analyzing the results you receive from cProfile. Then the author moves on to using line_profiler and kernprof to analyze the same (or similar) examples used with cProfile. I think this is one of the best balanced chapters in the book and really quite interesting all by itself.

Chapter three goes into using visual tools to help you understand your profiler’s output. In this chapter, you will learn about KCacheGrind / pyprof2calltree and RunSnakeRun. For the most part, you’ll just learn how to use these tools to figure out what your data means.

In chapter four, we learn about optimizing your code. Topics covered are memoization, list comprehensions, generators, ctypes, loading your own custom C library, and some others tips and tricks. While this chapter is short, it has some good ideas and is worth reading or at least skimming.

Chapter five digs into multithreading and multiprocessing. You’ll learn about the pros and cons of each. You will also learn about the Global Interpreter Lock and how that affects you when you choose one of these techniques.

Chapter six goes into using PyPy and Cython and how they can be useful for additional optimizations to your code. I enjoyed this chapter, although I didn’t feel that PyPy got as much attention as Cython. There also weren’t very many coding examples.

If you’re into number crunching, then chapter seven is for you. It goes over how to use Numba, Parakeet and pandas. Quite frankly, out of the three of libraries, I had only ever heard of pandas. I personally don’t need to do a lot of number crunching in my line of work, but it was interesting to see how each of the libraries worked and get a general idea of what they could be used for.

Finally in chapter eight, the author attempts to put it all together. This chapter probably should have been twice as long as it is so that he could have actually covered everything. But in the end, it covers just barely enough and you do get to see a full example get optimized from beginning to end.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I would recommend this to anyone who needs ideas for optimizing their Python code or just for learning about profiling in general.

Though I’ve programmed in R for some time, I am relatively new to Python. “Mastering Python High Performance” helped me with some Python syntax issues. I found Chapter 4 “Optimize Everything”, which includes coverage on dictionary lookups, list comprehensions & miscellaneous tips / tricks, the most useful. Chapter 5 was also interesting as it helped me understand the pros & cons of multithreading versus multiprocessing. Overall, I found this a helpful & informative text for a Python programmer with some prior experience in the language.

Mastering Python High Performance is a worthwhile buy for python programmers who are looking to take their skills to a new level. It gives you a pretty good explanation of how the code is executed when it is run which can be useful for anyone who wants to have more in depth knowledge of computing. If I had one gripe it would be it seems to rush into the topic a bit too quickly and jumps into algorithm and doesn’t sufficiently go over the topic. Overall, “High Performance Python” is a vast topic and this book does a good enough job getting into the finer points of python coding.

It's a fact of life that we get older. When we stop getting older, we'redead. Maybe instead of fighting the aging process, we could enjoy it a lot moreby embracing aging and using some simple but powerful techniques. Perhaps achange in thinking as well as in how we behave would be helpful.

It's really encouraging that early in the book, we're given the names offolks who have accomplished a lot in what others would call their golden years:at 91 Henry Kissinger added another book to his dozen plus ones; Phyllis Suescelebrated her 92nd birthday in 2015 by dancing the Tango; she took up theTango and the trapeze at the age of 80; Dick Van Dyke starred in a music videoin 2015 at the age of 89; many other examples are given.

What do these folks have in common? According to the author, they are"happy, grateful, optimistic, and appreciative." She then goes on to give ussome great ideas about how to accomplish this by choices we make in our dailylives. Many of the concepts are found in other programs not specifically aimedat the concept of aging, but I like that she focused them specifically forolder adults.

No matter your age, this book is filled with ideas that can help you live along, fruitful, and happy life. The title, by the way, is taken from one ofAbraham's workshops where he stated this is the way to live: happy, healthy...dead!--New Spirit Journal

This was a delightful read. The extensive examples were right on the nose. I kept finding myself in so many of the vignettes. Of course, this made it even more enjoyable to read. I could not recommend this more highly. I loved the title...as a friend of mine used to say: nobody gets out alive! ;-)

About the Author
Steven Heller is the co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program and co-founder of the MFA in Design Criticism program at SVA, New York. For 33 years he was an art director at the New York Times. He is editor of AIGA VOICE and contributing editor to Print, Eye, Baseline and I.D. magazines. He is the author of more than 120 books on design and popular culture. He is the recipient of the 1999 AIGA Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Véronique Vienne has worked at a number of US magazines as art director, and is the author of The Art of Doing Nothing and The Art of Imperfection. A frequent contributor to Graphis and Metropolis magazines, she lives in Paris.

Fascinating, beautiful book

I bought this book for my daughter who will be studying graphic design in the fall. It is a wonderful book filled with examples of the author's top 100. From small concepts, such as font usage, to the large architectural realm, it is covered well within this book.

Each of these topics can be covered further through some simple research, in case you want more in-depth understanding. This book simply gives a brief overview of each of each subject area and a few examples. Makes for a great conversation starter as you can flip through the pages and be inspired or forced to look at a subject differently.

Overall - a great primer into the world of Graphic Design.

A thorough and well documented journey through some of the ...

A thorough and well documented journey through some of the principal elements of Graphic Design's tool kit and their evolution, sometimes even centuries back.

I would have preferred more insight into how and why these evolutions occurred as well as additional context into the decision making/creative process graphic designers undergo, but this book is certainly approachable and valuable for laymen approaching graphic design.
