Seeing some new towels on the loom................

I got this book yesterday, flipped through it. Saw a concept I liked (the Rainbow Towels) and headed for the weaving room. Pulled colors and wound the warp. Later in the evening, I had a chance to sit down and really read the book. Dr. Fox does a wonderful job of explaining color, color blending, and the how's/why's of why some blending works and some blendings do not. If you are a weaver who requires everything done for you in a draft, this book may cause you some concern. But, please, perserver and start weaving. There are towels for 4, 6, and eight harness looms, with more 4 harness drafts. There is also a draft for a table runner. The weave structure is twill based. This book is like opening up a box of endless possibilities!

Great addition to my Weaving Library

In The Weaver’s Weevil, Rebecca Fox describe’s her favorite methods of using up her 8/2 cotton stash by combining many colors in the warp.

The book has 22 different drafts for dishtowels that combine small amounts of 8/2 cotton yarn into colorful towels. Most of the towels look like they would be fast to weave because they use one color of weft and the treading is simple.

There is also a chapter on weavers games to design color and structure challenges for just yourself or as a group or guild challenge.

The color combination ideas in the book could easily be applied to any weaving project.

I definitely see myself weaving some of the towels and also using the color combination ideas. I like this book and am glad it is in my library.

Inspiring use of color & creative layout of patterns. Great graphics & photos

Fabulous clear weaving drafts. Lots of inspiration! I got my copy of this book yesterday. I think it is terrific! I like that the drafts and threading diagrams and color suggestions are so clearly presented and easy to read. You can really SEE her drafts. No digging for a magnifying glass!

The photos of the finished objects are really luscious, excellent photos, gorgeous clear sharp graphics throughout. This is a book that you can pick up, and then you will be heading to the loom with one of her ideas as an inspiration.

There are 13 4-shaft drafts, 4 6-shaft drafts, 4 8-shaft drafts. One of her designs is overshot. Another is a twill with tabby every other pic. The book is not just simple twills, but the emphasis is on creative use of color rather than the emphasis being on more and more complex weave structures. I enjoyed seeing Zing on pages 99-103. This she discovered in a Japanese weaving book published in 1903, a 6-shaft pattern that is lovely. I can definitely see doing this soon.

I like that the author presents options. She shows a particular warp, then what it looks like with black warp, with white warp, with orange warp with blue warp.

I think this book is doable for the beginner because the drafts and color diagrams are so clearly presented that even a beginner would be able to follow them, even when the actual weave structures get more complex. However, I think the real beauty of this book is for the advanced weaver who may be looking at a closet full of yarn, and stumped in how to pull it together. The author even created 2 table-runners using 92 leftover partial bobbins.

I enjoy the fact that the drafts “seem” simple, but careful planning has gone into each woven object, as the author changes threading across the warp, creating beautiful combinations of a variety of patterns, then varies the treadling order to create pieces with variety in color, and pattern in both length and width.

Many of her finished object are towels, but also table runners, and a man’s vest. However the designs are equally applicable to wool or silk or bamboo or tencel scarves or shawls or heavy fabric for a bag. The concepts and drafts are a great place to start any project with multiple colors integrated into a whole, and as a guide for integrating multiple weaving patterns into a whole.

An overdue easy-to-digest explanation

This is a vital book for anyone involved with any aspect of HIV. Without going to the question of whether she is right or wrong (and I think she is right), I will say that the book is good in that it is easily approachable. HIV books are often, necessarily, mired in dense medical and biological terms ("non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors"). This book shines in its ability to explain those terms simply and effectively.
My only complaint here is that nearly half the book is either references or appendices -- ancilliary material. While that's certainly helpful and appreciated, it leaves the reader with little more than a big pamphlet.
Still, it's a great book to read, especially at a low price.

Not a drop of smugness

This book gives a balanced, scientifically verifiable assessment of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis/debate. NOWHERE in this book does Ms. Maggiore come across as smug or arrogant, or 'ha ha, I'm alive, you're dead' as one reviewer so idiotically put it. Her writing is concise, to the point, and devoid of mere opinions. The people who have written scathing criticisms of this book either did not read the entire book, or perhaps have reading comprehension difficulties. An excellent short summary, and a good lead-in to Peter Duesberg's seminal work "Inventing the AIDS Virus." Read it with your brain turned on. The AIDS issue in the U.S., as Ms. Maggiore put it so well, is a clear case of the victory of Politics over Science, Religion over Reason. Science is not about 'silencing' other theories and hypotheses that one doesn't agree with. Leave that sort of facism to tele-evangelists. If it were so, we would still be using leaches to cure disease.

The Inner World of Madness: View from the Inside

What then does schizophrenia mean to me? It means fatigue and confusion, it means trying to separate every experience into the real and the unreal and not sometimes being aware of where the edges overlap. It means trying to think straight when there is a maze of experiences getting in the way, and when thoughts are continually being sucked out of your head so that you become embarrassed to speak at meetings. It means feeling sometimes that you are inside your head and visualising yourself walking over your brain, or watching another girl wearing your clothes and carrying out actions as you think them. It means knowing that you are continually "watched," that you can never succeed in life because the laws are all against you and knowing that your ultimate destruction is never far away.

When tragedy strikes, one of the things that make life bearable for people is the sympathy of friends and relatives. This can be seen, for example, in a natural disaster like a flood and with a chronic disease like cancer. Those closest to the person afflicted offer help, extend their sympathy, and generally provide important solace and support in the person's time of need. "Sympathy," said Emerson, "is a supporting atmosphere, and in it we unfold easily and well." A prerequisite for sympathy is an ability to put oneself in the place of the person afflicted. One must be able to imagine oneself in a flood or getting cancer. Without this ability to put oneself in the place of the person afflicted, there can be abstract pity but not true sympathy.

Sympathy for those afflicted with schizophrenia is sparse because it is difficult to put oneself in the place of the sufferer. The whole disease process is mysterious, foreign, and frightening to most people. As noted by Roy Porter in A Social History of Madness, "strangeness has typically been the key feature in the fractured dialogues that go on, or the silences that intrude, between the ‘mad' and the ‘sane.' Madness is a foreign country."

Schizophrenia, then, is not like a flood, where one can imagine all one's possessions being washed away. Nor like a cancer, where one can imagine a slowly growing tumor, relentlessly spreading from organ to organ and squeezing life from your body. No, schizophrenia is madness. Those who are afflicted act bizarrely, say strange things, withdraw from us, and may even try to hurt us. They are no longer the same person—they are mad! We don't understand why they say what they say and do what they do. We don't understand the disease process. Rather than a steadily growing tumor, which we can understand, it is as if the person has lost control of his/her brain. How can we sympathize with a person who is possessed by unknown and unseen forces? How can we sympathize with a madman or a madwoman?

The paucity of sympathy for those with schizophrenia makes it that much more of a disaster. Being afflicted with the disease is bad enough by itself. Those of us who have not had this disease should ask ourselves, for example, how we would feel if our brain began playing tricks on us, if unseen voices shouted at us, if we lost the capacity to feel emotions, and if we lost the ability to reason logically. As one individual with schizophrenia noted: "My greatest fear is this brain of mine. . . . The worst thing imaginable is to be terrified of one's own mind, the very matter that controls all that we are and all that we do and feel." This would certainly be burden enough for any human being to have to bear. But what if, in addition to this, those closest to us began to avoid us or ignore us, to pretend that they didn't hear our comments, to pretend that they didn't notice what we did? How would we feel if those we most cared about were embarrassed by our behavior each day?

Because there is little understanding of schizophrenia, so there is little sympathy. For this reason it is the obligation of everyone with a relative or close friend with schizophrenia to learn as much as possible about what the disease is and what the afflicted person is experiencing. This is not merely an intellectual exercise or a way to satisfy one's curiosity but rather the means to make it possible to sympathize with the person. For friends and relatives who want to be helpful, probably the most important thing to do is to learn about the inner workings of the brain of a person with schizophrenia. One mother wrote me after listening to her afflicted son's descriptions of his hallucinations: "I saw into the visual hallucinations that plagued him and frankly, at times, it raised the hair on my neck. It also helped me to get outside of my tragedy and to realize how horrible it is for the person who is afflicted. I thank God for that painful wisdom. I am able to cope easier with all of this."

With sympathy, schizophrenia is a personal tragedy. Without sympathy, it becomes a family calamity, for there is nothing to knit people together, no balm for the wounds. Understanding schizophrenia also helps demystify the disease and brings it from the realm of the occult to the daylight of reason. As we come to understand it, the face of madness slowly changes before us from one of terror to one of sadness. For the sufferer, this is a significant change.

The best way to learn what a person with schizophrenia experiences is to listen to someone with the disease. For this reason I have relied heavily upon patients' own accounts in describing the signs and symptoms. As I read through the publication I found much of what was being said to be interesting information. However being a person with schizophrenia I have found it to be more than overcritical. Sure there are several people that cannot function after being diagnosed with schizophrenia, but there are some who can resume a regular life. I am currently enrolled in college, associate with other people, drive, and carry on my life as regular. Though schizophrenia leaves a large shadow over my life, it is not good to give up hope of resuming life. Perhaps the authors point of view is of those with more serious symptoms, and such i feel it makes his publication inaccurate. When he said to give up hope, that is when he decided to put the book down. For truly in the case of schizophrenia one should never give up hope, for that may be the only thing they have to hold onto to!

My son was diagnosed with schizophrenia and commited suicide. He was early in his diagnosis and we didn't have time to learn much about the illness as he kept many things hidden from us until the very end. This book has brought me so much help in my grieving process. Through the knowledge I've gained from this book, a lot of pieces have fallen into place. It doesn't make my pain any less, but it is comforting to have some questions answered regarding my sons behavior that I never associated with schizophrenia. I highly recommend this book and have been passing it around to family members so they can gain a better understanding. I wish my son would have been able to read it himself and see that there is hope. Even if you don't know anyone personally with schizophrenia I would recommend reading it just to gain a better understanding and compassion for those afflicted and their families.

A human look at personally debilitating disease

The difficulty with a lot of academic work is that it doesn't get to the root of the problem of living with a disease. This book has a wealth of critical information, not just about the medical developments and scientific understanding of mental illness, not just schitzophrenia, but touches on many different organic, chemical imbalances in the brain. More importantly, it talks about the weaknesses in the U.S. medical and welfare systems that present more difficult challenges for people who have physical or chemical imperfects in the body's most critical organ. It presents possible solutions to the difficulties of getting a solid diagnosis and correct treatment.

This is a great book for anyone interested in how the body and brain works. It is written in remarkably simple language, but covers everything from scientific explanations, research and development to social and political obstacles.

This should be a university text book for people studying psychology or psychiatry. If it were, the patients might receive better treatment.

Beautifully Detailed and Superb Quality Visual Dictionary

This affordable, enjoyable, and essential reference tool is an amazing addition to my Spanish learning tools. There is a spot-on review by a member named Shawn, so I will suggest you read that review dated September 9, 2013. I will add that the product description indicates this book is a paperback, but it is not. It actually has a sturdy cover, although the cover is not nearly as thick as the typical hard bound book. For me this is is very preferable, keeping the dictionary on the lighter side, yet more durable than a paperback. It is also impressive that the pages of this book are sewn to the binding, not just glued... very good quality. The full-color illustrations are very clear and are presented with a practical and appealing layout. The wide variety of themes are nicely organized with color coded sections that can be seen even when the book is closed, helping you to turn to a desired section quickly. Finally, there are 2 complete and thorough indexes, one in English and one in Spanish, which include alphabetical listings and locations of every single word in the dictionary.

The only English-Spanish Visual Dictionary You Will Ever Need!!!

This is the best picture dictionary for Spanish I have ever seen. I would absolutely give this product 10 starts if I could! It very thorough, and covers a wide range of categories. It does not just give you a picture with the name of the item in the picture. It breaks every little piece of the picture down. For example: there are several pictures of different kinds of bicycles, but it is further broken down to show you the chain, pedals, derailleurs, crank, etc. It has sections for anatomy of the body, with a lot of detail, cooking ingredients; broken down into several categories.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying seriously increase for vocabulary of Spanish or English, or even for the casual user.

Holy frijoles, batman. This is about as in-depth as you can get.
It doesn't just give the word for fork, but point, tine, root, neck, back, and handle as well...I didn't know most of those words in English.
Need to know what a snail dish is? Page 303.
Trying to talk about partridges, quail, ravens, and shrikes? (Those are all different kinds of birds...) Page 163.
Need a tail comb vs a barber comb? Page 476.
If you ever find yourself on a nuclear submarine, just flip to page 899 and you'll be able to find your way around.
Now, common sense would dictate that 1152 pages (more than 22,500 words) would be either a big book, or a heavy one (or both), but it didn't dawn on me when I purchased it. Be forewarned...this book is 7 3/4 inches tall, 6 1/2 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. And it weighs 3 1/2 pounds. It is NOT a pocket book by any means.

Key book for ad avanced professional level understanding re vaccines. Caution... is 1500 pages and not immediately useful for most physicians, nurses or students. For most purposes, an excellent free book re vaccines with all the needed essentials is simply the CDC "Pink Book" on the Epidemiology of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/index.html). which runs to about 300 pages + about 100 pages of appendixes so sufficient for most purposes. But for a researcher or a consultant or someone who has to give talks to professional groups about vaccines then this book edited by Plotkin, Orenstein and Offit book does indeed remain an essential reference.

A great catalyst for clearing up all relationships

Helen Greaves is not only an extraordinarily clear telepath with those who have died, she writes with vivid descriptions about the harmful or healing impact of the characters' thoughts when they were alive. This book will inspire anyone to love more deeply, to lift and aid a wider group of people whenever possible.

Reading this little gem of a book, I realized certain attitudes that I too would have to face and correct when I am on the other side. I began to see beyond the surface feelings of past relationships and to write heart-filled letters asking for forgiveness to those whom I have pulled away from in the past--and felt justified. The hate-filled mistress, her lost servant, and the her son's transforming love will inspire you and possibly transform your life. I am ordering a dozen copies to send to my best friends!

I loved Testamony of Light by Helen Greaves, and bought Wheel of Eternity because of it. However, as much as I enjoyed Testamony, this book has had an even greater impact on me--so much so, that I bought two copies so I can always have one to loan.

An Elegant Compendium of Modern Homes, Few of Which Really Have Small Footprints

I've read through this book twice now, and ideas just keep jumping off the page at me. The book features one amazing home after another, with each one getting several pictures, often some architectural sketches, and then ample descriptive text. This is what I call "an architect home" book, as it features one amazing architect-built house after another. These are not homes I see around my neighborhood or anywhere I go, for that matter. These are exceptional homes for people and organizations with dough.

I have one problem with this book: It's described via its title as being focused on sustainability and featuring "houses with small footprints." And yet, many of the homes in this book have 4,000+ square feet. The smaller ones have 2,000 square feet. Small footprints? In many cases, the actual footprint of the living space far exceeds the footprint of the main structure because of the extensive deck systems and highly architectural grounds. And while it's true that all of the homes in this book are "green" in some way -- they have things like rain-recovery systems, extra insulation, underground locations, and repurposed materials -- it's far from a book about truly environmentally friendly homes. This is not an Earth Ship book; it's a fine home book. So why pretend it's all about sustainability?

These are homes built on a massive scale. I show this in some of my images: these are houses with massive interior areas to heat and cool; these are houses with massive footprints (in many cases); these are houses made from all kinds of modern materials sourced from all over the world; and these are houses for the very rich. There is no doubt about it that this is a high-end home book. If we all lived in homes like this, if that were even possible, I fear that our planet would be in even worse trouble than it already is simple because of how many expensive materials it clearly takes to build these massive, high-end homes. Plus, there is nothing sustainable about one family taking up this much space and these many resources.

So why 4 stars if I'm so crabby about this book? Well, it's still a gorgeous book full of amazing ideas about modern home building. Really, my only beef with this book is that it represents itself as being "green" when it's only a very, very light shade of that color.

On Rereading this Classic 50 Years Later

I first read this book 50 years ago and then took from it one basic idea that has guided my reading ever since...That one idea was that every good non-fiction book deserves 3 readings. The purpose of the first rapid read is to get an overview of the general thrust or central thesis of the book. The second reading involves digging in, an attempt to understand and analyze the author's central argument or thesis, and the third reading is for the purpose of argument, i.e., of reflecting on where we agree with the book and where we disagree, and why...

50 years after that first reading, i still try to follow the advice (above), and find it as helpful and true today as it was back then.

So, what in particular did I gain in from my current reading of this fine book, this gem? Three or four things, all of which are, at least to me, important.

First, re the value of reading the intro or the preface in which the author often says specifically and explicitly what his central thesis is.

Second, re the value of reading the last chapter or even the very last 8 to 10 paragraphs in which the author may, once again, summarize the whole central purpose and argument of the book, which gives you a key to understanding the work in its entirety.

And, third, don't begin arguing with a book until you are certain that you have understood it as well as you possibly can.

Bottom-line, I'm happy that I went back to reread this fine book.

Learning How and What to read from great absent teachers

I have always had a nagging feeling that I didn’t know how to read well. This book showed me that I was right. But it also showed me that I wasn’t expected to know how to read well (not with the kind of education most of us receive) and that I wasn’t alone in my ignorance. Reading well involves hard work and precise skills. This book provides the latter — the former is up to us.

We take reading for granted because we are supposed to be fully alphabetised at around tenth grade. We are not told that this is just the first level of reading — Elementary Reading (Part 1, Ch. 3) — when you learn to recognise the written symbols and to convey meaning from them. You learn how to grow your vocabulary on your own and to transfer and compare concepts from different reading materials. But most of us stop there. And from there we live the rest of our lives treating books in undeserving ways, wasting too much time on the bad ones and granting so little time to the good ones. The great ones, we hardly read, because they scare us.

The problem of wasting time can be drastically diminished by applying the second level of reading — Inspectional Reading (Part 1, Ch. 4). This level means “skimming systematically” to grasp as much as you can from a book in a limited time-frame (possibly just a few minutes). That was an important skill on Adler and Doren’s time when libraries were the norm, but it is even more important now when you have digital previews of a plethora of books in services such as Amazon. If “Customer’s Review” sections existed during their time, I am sure they would also have devoted a portion of Chapter 4 to provide insights on how to better profit from them.

The problem of spending little time on the good (or great) books can only be solved by the third level of reading — Analytical reading (Part 2). Without it, you either refrain from reading a good book altogether (specially a great one) or you read it badly. “Reading badly”, the book explains, is to read passively. Reading analytically is very active and it is hard work. To help us in this endeavour, the book provides extensive advice on how to physically mark the books we read (Part 1, Ch. 5). These note-taking techniques are indispensable to read well and the reader is advised to experiment with them and adapt them to his own style of understanding and to the new types of media now available.

To read analytically you have to ask yourself a number of questions while reading and you must make your best to answer them yourself. The authors present these questions in sequence, but they are quick to explain that in practice (and with experience) we should try to answer them mostly simultaneously.

First, you need to know what the book is about as a whole (Ch. 6 and Ch. 7). This means first categorising the book, then expressing its unity in as few words as possible. You should then proceed to outline its main parts, each of which should be treated as a subordinate whole and have its unity also expressed. This process could continue ad aeternum, but “the degree of approximation varies with the character of the book and your purpose in reading it”. At the end, you should have identified what questions the author wants to answer himself.

After this more “descriptive” stage, you should now try to grasp the author’s message (Ch. 8 and Ch. 9). This means first reconciling the grammatical and the logical aspects of what he writes by matching his chosen words with the terms they express. Only then you can identify the important sentences and paragraphs (the grammatical units) in order to establish the author’s leading propositions and arguments (the units of thought and knowledge — the logical units). Once you have reached actual understanding by identifying and interpreting the author’s terms, propositions and arguments, you can now evaluate if the author has answered the questions (the problems) you identified earlier.

You and the author are now peers and the best thing you can do now is to praise him by criticising his book (Ch. 10 and Ch. 11). However, in order to do so, there are rules, just like there are rules to reach understanding — there is an intellectual etiquette grounded on rhetorical skills the reader must possess. You should understand first and only then criticise, but not contentiously or disputatiously. You may disagree based on the author’s lack of information, misinformation or reasoning fallacies. You may also judge the author’s completeness as faulty. But the most important maxim is to do so with the sole intention of conveying and discussing knowledge, not opinions. “Knowledge consists in those opinions that can be defended” and “opinion is unsupported judgement.” You must be sure to distinguish between both.

So you have described the book, you have understood it and you have criticised it — now what? This is the last (and possibly most important) question you should make. If the book has enlightened you, even if just a little, you must go further — you might even have to act upon it. I like what the authors say about this question applied to historical books: “The answer to the question lies in the direction of practical, political action.” History shows what has been done, so it is a lesson of what we can do or avoid doing. In the same way, whatever the kind of enlightenment you had by reading the book, you have had a glimpse of truth — you can’t ignore it now that you know it.

Part 3 is useful in that it provides some interesting aspects of specific types of reading material, namely practical books, history (including biographies and current events), imaginative literature (including plays and poems), science and mathematics, philosophy and the social sciences. While a pleasure to read, it is not imperative that you do so if you have fully grasped the analytical reading process. There is, however, a lot of value in this part of the book, specially in the later chapters, and the reader is strongly advised to read it. One thing I should say is that, while they detail interesting aspects of reading imaginative literature, their techniques mostly apply to expository works. I think their best advice with respect to the former is “don’t try to resist the effect that a work of imaginative literature has on you”. This means allowing the work to show you “a deeper, or greater reality”. And this reality is “the reality of our inner life”. We don’t need any more rules than this one.

The last part of the book presents the fourth (and highest) level of reading — Syntopical reading — or reading two or more books on the same subject. By reading syntopically you are not concerned with understanding each book in all its details — in fact, you won’t read any of the individual books analytically (not at the present syntopical reading effort, at least). Here you are reading each book for what it may contribute to your own problem, not for the book’s own sake. Furthermore, you are not reading to find the truth or to establish your own voice — you would be only one more voice in the conversation. You are simply trying to understand the controversy itself, to establish the many voices you hear in a pure exercise of dialectical objectivity. This is a fantastic topic, which the authors have materialised in their greatest contribution to mankind, in my opinion — the Syntopicon, volumes II and III of the Great Books of the Western World. The reader is very much advised to check it out.

The book ends with two appendices. The first one provides a fascinating list of great books — the “endlessly readable” books. The list may seem overwhelming at first glance (and it is!), but the authors are prompt to address the reader and explain that the list does not have any time frame attached to it. I say it should just be begun — even an ignorant reader like me will be so flabbergasted by what he will learn that he will never stop reading it. This is a project for your life as a whole — to never stop reading these books. For a much more restrictive (but also magnificent) reading list, the reader is referred to the 10-year-reading plan provided in Adler’s Great Books.

The second appendix provides exercises and tests on all four levels of reading. I must admit that I hadn’t read them until I got this far in my review. I then decided to do it and now I tell you this: just read it. If you have had literature classes as an undergraduate or graduate student, you might find it slightly commonplace. But if you haven’t, like me, you will be glad you read it. Like they state at the beginning of the appendix, the selected texts are "themselves worth reading", so you can’t lose much by doing so. It is a delightful taste of what awaits you in your future exploits of the Great Books — if you do well and accept the challenge, of course.

On my part, simply put, this book has changed my life. It not only showed me "how" to read a book, but it also showed me "what" to read. I’ll be forever in debt with two of the greatest absent teachers I’ve had, Dr. Mortimer J. Adler and Dr. Charles Van Doren.

it is still the best book out there that I have encountered for learning ...

Although this book is somewhat hard to read, which is somewhat ironic, it is still the best book out there that I have encountered for learning how to read and digest a book. I have used these techniques for years now and am still able to remember outlines of books and particular points authors made in those books years later. If you incorporate the material Adler and Van Doren present in this book you will be able to amaze your friends and bore your wife beyond the reach of your wildest dreams.
