At their destination, they encounter the prospective bride's frightening uncle, Monsieur Zabocat, purportedly a quimboiseur, or wizard, of the worst degree. After overcoming Zabocat's several curses, which lead both young men into many true tests of friendship, the couple is married and all ends happily. Pinkney's scratchboard and oil artwork switches from bright daytime hues for most of the book to purples and grays for scenes with the zombies and snakes, which are very effective. An afterword gives valuable information about the origins of the tale, and a glossary with pronunciation makes reading aloud and/or telling the tale a real pleasure. Based on a story from the island of Martinique (via Europe), this begins with two friends, Clement and Hippolyte, who have been raised as brothers. Clement has fallen in love with the beautiful Pauline, so the duo head off to woo her. Pauline readily accepts Clement's proposal, despite the fury of her uncle, Monsieur Zabocat, who is rumored to be a wizard. The three young people return to Clement's plantation, but in the dark of night, Hippolyte spies three zombies, who have been ordered by Monsieur Zabocat to make sure the wedding never takes place. Anyone who reveals the zombies' murderous plans will be turned to stone. After a slow start, the story ignites with dark and glorious elements. Love, hate and death take shape in Pinkney's impressive scratchboard-and-oil artwork, which is given full range in the dramatic two-page spreads. In his informative afterword, San Souci notes that one appeal of the book lies in its emphasis on the friendship of black and white characters (Clement is West Indian, Hippolyte, French), and while this is true, it is really the brooding elements of the netherworld and the promise of redemption that give the story its potency. Set in Jamaica, a tale of true friendship.

This story is told similar to that of a folkloric tale passed on for many years from generation to generation. It has spiritual undertones and an essence of an important life lesson passed down time and again in a family. The illustrations are wonderful, (Pinkney's artwork is always great) and it is evocative of the island's mystery and danger. The two main characters' friendship is strong, bi-racial and surprise! The friend proving loyalty is the white man to the black man. This is a new one. It is the black man who has good fortune and is getting married! We need more examples like this in children's literature of mixed friendships, different ways to look at the world, new culture, strange new lands, and ties that bind people together rather than the tired old stereotypes. The students in my classroom loved this tale, because it was so fresh and new. As a teacher who is caucasian teaching in a predominantly black school, I look to Robert D. San Souci for interesting stories that appeal to the population I teach. The students always enjoy his stories such as The White Cat, etc. All are folktales with strong, interesting themes.

When other friendships have been forgot, ours will still be hot

When author Robert San Souci isn't writing yet another version of the Cinderella story (this man has done everything from skeletons to Cajuns, I kid you not) he can be found writing the film script to the Disney film Mulan, adapting every folktale known to man, and collaborating with some of the best living children's illustrators out there today. He can probably tile his floor with his Coretta Scott King Awards at this point and that Caldecott Honor he acquired from "The Faithful Friend" probably doesn't look too shabby either. Of course, Mr. San Souci hasn't a degree in folktales nor has he ever worked in a professional capacity when studying them. My response? Capacity schmapacity. This guy does his research, knows his stuff, and produces some of the best darned picture book folktales out there today. If his backgrounds just in advertising and film reviewing, so be it. At least he has a healthy respect for the genre and a great ear for folktale text. "The Faithful Friend" is an excellent example of both.

On an island in Martinique, two boys grew up on a sugar plantation. One boy was Clement, a brown-skinned boy who's father owned the estate. The other was Hippolyte, Clement's white companion and servant of the house. The boys grew up together and one day Clement told his friend that he'd fallen in love with Pauline, the niece of a man rumored to be a wizard. Hippolyte worries that there may be danger in going to visit her, but his friend won't be talked out of it. Together they travel along the coast road and, as they go, bury a poor beggar they find dead along the road. When at last the boys meet Pauline she's charmed by Clement but her uncle is not impressed. Though she swears to marry her new (some might say instant) love, the uncle vows to stop them at whatever the cost. Now Hippolyte must save his friend and insipient bride from zombies, poisoned fruit, nasty water, snakes, and that awful fate of turning to stone. Friendship has never been so good.

In an Afterword of the book, San Souci gives a riveting account of the many variations of this tale and gives a mighty compelling explanation of why exactly he chose this particular version. Turns out that this story is a Martiniquan version with an alluring chance to incorporate ghosts and grateful dead (sans Jerry Garcia) to the mix. He makes several allusions to "The Types of the Folk-Tale" by Antti Arne, which lists every single folktale variant and gives each one a number. Hence, your average grateful deal/the dead man as helper tale is tale type 505 while the rescued princess/the grateful dead man story is more along the lines of tale type 506. I don't know about you but I'm now itching to get my hands on this "Type" book to find more stories that fit certain molds.

When he chose to tell this tale of a black character and his white hero sidekick, San Souci switched the genre from the typical white-guy-and-his-magical-black-friend story found in every bad movie and book to something original and interesting. Race is not necessarily a factor in this book, allowing the viewer the chance to concentrate far more on the story than the politics. Because San Souci is throwing every folktale trick into the mix (from the ghostly to the ghoulish to the ghastly to the gorgeous) you might think that he's in danger of spreading himself too thin. Quite the opposite turns out to be the case. Though he draws from a variety of different sources, San Souci finds the perfect balance between the fabulous and the meaningful. This is a story about friendship, plain and simple. It just throws in a few zombies here and there for kicks.

San Souci has paired with every conceivable illustrator in the past and in this particular case he has been put together with the very well-known Brian Pinkney. Personally, I much prefer Brian Pinkney's pictures to those of his father Jerry Pinkney. His pairing with San Souci has always been particularly inspired, and I consider their work on "Sukey and the Mermaid" to be an example of one of the best picture books available to kids today (and certainly the top mermaid picture book every made). In this picture book Pinkney engages in full-throttle no-holds-barred scratchboard and oil pictures. The result are lush full-color spreads that shed delicate pink/purple light from oil skies onto scratchboard faces or delicately swirl circular winds of power around hot orange mangoes in a zombie's hand. Speaking of the zombies, I don't know how San Souci pictured them when he wrote this story down, but Pinkney has made them somewhat hot. These are good-looking zombie women. An odd but interesting choice on the artist's part.

You know, I don't usually like scratchboard picture books. When Mr. Pinkney wrote and illustrated, "The Adventures of Sparrowboy", I felt the technique was completely unnecessary. Seeing it in the context of this story, however, it not only works but compliments the story itself. All in all, "The Faithful Friend" is everything a good children's folktale should be. Creepy and lovely and with a good moral that is not moralistic. A jolly good read altogether.

Well Done...

I read this book with no prior knowledge of the author or any of his other literary work. What first captured my attention were the two young men of color on the book cover. Second thing that captured more of my attention were the well done, scenic, and colorful illustrations by Brian Pinkney. Author Robert D. San Souci even added a glossary for the words that young readers of the English language may not be familiar with. For example, words such as Bon-Die, Bonjou, Monfi, and Monsieur.

"The Faithful Friend" tells the heartfelt story of just that...a faithful friend. Clement (of Martinique in the Caribbean) and Hippolyte (of French descent) were friends, yet as close as brothers. They embark on a travel for Clement to propose marriage to a young woman that he fell in love with by sight of a picture only. Along the way they discovered the dead body of an old beggar in a banana grove. The good hearted young men provide a burial for the body and continued on their journey. After reaching their destination, all was well with the woman... but her Uncle did not care for a marriage between the two. The Uncle was also a wizard. He attempted to cast a spell on the young man who sought a wife, but the faithfulness of a friend caused none of the spells to work. On their journey home the friendship is demonstrated in more ways than one. The mystery that surrounds the spells and the faithfulness of the friend captures the readers attention. At one point I thought that I could predict the ending, but the author was too slick to let his readers be disappointed by having a predictable ending.

Overall, this is one book that I will highly recommend to young readers because it is well done from beginning to end (story and illustration). It is like an old folks tale with a French & Caribbean flavor. It may also spark a young reader to want to learn a foreign language, which is a valuable skill to acquire.

An outstanding analysis of issues grappling an emerging economy

This book is a must read for anybody wishing to dig deeper into India's recent impressive economic performance and undeniable presence in the world. It offers an outstanding analysis of post independent India's growth experience in the form of four distinct phases--relating it meticulously to the content and pace of economic reforms--and convincingly addresses key issues such as why did growth stall in post independent India, and why it took off again, how the process was affected by the country's complex political process, and where are the promises and challenges for the future. It also provides a very thorough account of the role of government in the macro and structural reform process. Finally, it raises several timely questions in light of the recent economic and financial strains confronting the world economy: is the government's fiscal policy sustainable or would it result in runaway inflation and/or economic crises? How urgent is the need for fiscal consolidation? What is the state of the financial system and does it need to be fixed? What are the risks of a balance of payments crisis--akin to that experienced in the early 1990s?

Notwithstanding its very comprehensive analysis, the book reaches out to a wide spectrum of readers--its careful data analysis with a rich dose of charts and tables will definitely appeal the thorough academician who expects statements to be backed by adequate statistics; at the same time, the issues are close to the heart of any pragmatic policymaker, not just in India but in other emerging market economy. Comprehensive Study

This book is a comprehensive and in-depth study of the Indian Economy, its journey since India's independence in 1947 till 2006.

There is no doubt that India is now a rapidly growing economy, even under challenging and grim global economic scenario, and is considered to a be strong contender of the global economic pie in the twenty first century.

It is often said that India got independence twice - Political freedom in 1947 from the British Raj and Economic Freedom in 1991 from "License Raj".

Prof Panagaria documents and analyses the economic policy, principles, thought, directions, outcomes and his own views during the six decades of India's economic evolution.

The "Four Phases" and growth rates: 1. Take off under a liberal regime (1951-65 @ 4.1%) 2. Socialism strikes with a vengeance (1965-81 @ 3.2 %) 3. Liberalization under Stealth (1981-88 @ 4.8 %) 4. Triumph of liberalization (1988-2006 at 6.3 %), is the most logical segregation of the six decades of very distinct policy regimes of the times.

One chapter devoted to each of the above phases helps us understand the forces and factors that dictated the political and policy directions, based on domestic and international developments and compulsions.

Till the late 1980's the fundamental thought in Indian economic policy was based on a bias towards establishing a "socialistic" pattern of society, where the government played the predominant role in determining the allocation of "scarce" recourses. The public sector played a key role in most industries, and the Industrial Licensing policy coupled with powerful laws like Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Polices Act, Foreign Exchange Regulations Act, not only isolated India in global trade and investments from the rest of the world but also converted the whole economy into an autarky that crippled its soul.

In contrast, South Korea with a comparable per capita GDP as India's in 1960's adopted outward oriented and market friendly policies that propelled its economic growth and prosperity. The chapter "A tale of two countries" is an excellent read.

Since 1991, enabled by the massive liberalization of the economy that unleashed market forces and attracted foreign investments and technology, India's outward orientation has made a quantum jump to over 43 % as compared to just 8 % in the late 70's.

Despite excellent growth rates, especially in the last decade, India faces the twin challenges of equitable growth and poverty alleviation.

Prof Panagaria has devoted a chapter each to "Declining Poverty" and "Inequality" to discuss the two key topics that are often at the top on the manifestos of most political parties, at least during election campaigns.

Prof Panagaria advocates direct transfer of funds to people below the poverty line (BPL) instead of resorting to subsidies that result in corruption and leakage. Subsidies are not only regressive, but are distortionary argues the author. This policy prescription cuts across all sectors. Given the lack of connectivity and poor reach of the banking system in remote areas, I personally doubt the feasibility of such transfers.

A chapter each to discuss key sectors - Finance, Agriculture, Industry, Education, Health care, Manufacturing, Tax Reform. Telecom and Electricity to name some, the depth of coverage, references, analysis and concluding remarks are splendid.

An excellent reference material, I would recommend this as essential reading to students, business managers, bureaucrats and politicians who will shape the economic destiny and prosperity of the world's largest democracy in the Twenty First Century.

All in one for the Retail Industry - a fantastic book

This Eli Goldratt's last novel, it's about Distribution and Retail. He had first “The Goal” with Production, “Critical Chain” with Projects, and now the Distribution solution, which is one of the TOC's most known applications today and one of the most successfully. The solution is so obvious that it is also the name of the book.
The point is like many other TOC (Theory of Constraints) applications it is not quite well known and it is less implemented. We could say it is ignorance but I think it is not the case. Every manager that works on logistics and on Retail/Distribution can know TOC but the obvious, so obvious to implement, gets stuck in the traditional way of thinking.

In this book Goldratt gives us not only the rational for the solution, the solution itself, but also the way to cover the change management part, which by the way is the most difficult to deal when we are talking about implementations.

So it’s all in one, in a common language with the minimum of technicalities. It’s a good story also, and a superb job in describing a superior management tool, for the Retail industry.

The only point I think Goldratt could improve this fantastic book was the story itself. But for this he needed at least more 100 pages or so.

I did enjoy the story as it was told. I do believe that it is easy to get lost in the story and develop envy for the position Paul is in and how that aids in his ease of fixing the challenges he faced. I did experience some challenge with that so I stepped back, actually stopped reading the book for a few days to regain my perspective. As a manager in a high volume, fast paced and high visibility location, I experience similar issues and find the guiding principles in the theory of constraints an excellent tool to have on my belt. Interestingly enough, despite my environment being that of a shop, I actually found more value in the story as it was told in The Goal, perhaps because of the challenges I am presently faced with. I highly recommend both books to leaders of people and systems. Certainly tools worth having.

Understanding Inventory

I picked this book up as I enjoy reading business novels and learning new concepts in a "real" setting. Isn't It Obvious is about Hannah's Shop in Boca Raton, FL. As this is from Eli Goldratt the book is about Theory of Constrains (TOC).

The book starts out with a struggling company trying to get a handle on their business and understand their problems. Fortunately they have a Jonah (The Goal) they can turn to for help and guidance. The book takes you through retail issues such as SKUs, partial orders, inventory, and controlling base costs. I am not too familiar with retail terms so I had to fight through some of these parts to make sure I understood what was being discussed.

Chapter 14 was helpful in describing inventory turns (stores yearly sales divided by average cost of the inventory). They realized how helpful understanding this ratio can be to understanding sales. One good point was holding inventory where they sell less than one a day, but were holding 15 in inventory.

Chapter 18 was another helpful chapter where the authors take the readers through supply lead time, inventory and lead time for replenishment.

As with most books bits and pieces can be applied to any size company, but the sweet spot will be for the small businesses who carry different inventory in competitive locations. The story was a little dry, but easy to fight through and root for the owners and the business to thrive and grow.

A different breed of science fiction

Arthur C. Clarke was a master wordsmith. He wrote amazing science fiction novels that took the incomprehensible and made it imaginable, all while writing with gorgeous poetic style that greatly improves the emotional impact.

One of the reasons I love this novel is that it, like H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine", is a more contemplative novel. It contemplates the solar neutrino problem (which was solved around 2001, ironically enough), interstellar travel, space colonization, culture clash, and humanity ourselves.

One review I read on another site of this book said, "By far the most optimistic take on a post-apocalyptic scenario ever," and frankly, I agree totally with that statement. Without giving too much away, one thing I love about this book is its ending: it manages to be very much a happy ending, but also still heart-breakingly sad, simultaneously. Few could pull of something like that, and Clarke did it.

Clarke said this was his favorite of his works. I can see why.

Thalassans Above and Underneath the Water

At the end of the 20th century it is discovered by studying the sun’s neutrino emissions that the Sun will become a nova around the year 3620. A global effort to save some of humanity is undertaken at the same time as a regiment of birth control is instituted so that as few people as possible would have to experience the last days of planet Earth. Space ships carrying embryos and DNA are sent out to nearby solar systems in the galaxy to seed hospitable planets with human life. The parents of the first generation of humans on other planets were robots. Thalassa is one of those worlds and this story takes place almost entirely on Thalassa in the year 3800AD.

One day a space ship Magellan arrives from Earth carrying 100,000’s of cryptogenically frozen humans. Magellan left right before the end of the world. Magellan was able to make the journey of 70+ light years in about 500 years using the so called Quantum Drive. However, at such speeds (15-20% of the speed of light) a collision with even an atom can be devastating, so Magellan carries a huge ice shield in front of it to clean up the space ahead of it. Magellan continuing further, stopped on Thalassa to replenish the ice shield and that is how the Thalassans and the crew on Magellan (the ones who are awake) get to meet. There is also an intelligent race, the Scorps, living in the oceans of Thalassa. The story of the book is centered on the interaction between the Thalassans, the Magellan crew, as well as the Scorps.

One thing I like about almost all of Artur C. Clarke’s stories is that they are scientifically plausible. There are typically no violations of the laws of nature, no time travel back in time, no travel faster than the speed of light, human civilization does not become a super advanced civilization in a few years, and he understands science concepts. This way it becomes easier for me to imagine the story as being real sometime in the future. This is true for this story as well. Well, I should say that in this novel Arthur C Clarke comes up with his own explanation for the Solar Neutrino Problem that was discovered in the 1960’s. Arthur C Clarke’s interpretation in this book was that the sun was about to die. We now know that the explanation is that a large amount of the neutrinos change to two different forms of neutrinos and therefore went undetected. So we are safe (with respect to this issue).

In his older novels Arthur C. Clarke often does not put enough effort into character development and dialogue. I feel that he did a better job in this novel. He spends time developing the characters and creating believable social interactions. He described the social interaction between the people of the old Earth culture and the separately created Thallassan culture pretty well, and the same can be said in regards to the discovery of the pre-existing underwater culture of the Scorps. I should say that I like Arthur C Clarke’s typical musings on technology, science, and mysteries but adding interesting dialogues and human aspects does not hurt.

Some aspects of this novel that I did not like as much were that it was an unusually slow paced novel with a somewhat predictable and bland ending. Well I read the short story version first so I guess that does not help. However, I felt that the sense of mystery and awe that dominated in novels like “Rendezvous with Rama”, 2001, and 2010, and “Childhood’s End”, was mostly lacking. I still recommend this science fiction novel, especially to Arthur C. Clarke fans.

Seeding Missions Sent To Earth-Like Planets

Earth scientists are given a 1000 year advance warning that our sun will explode and the solar system will be destroyed. In response, re-seed missions are sent to numerous uninhabited earth-like planets in nearby galaxies (when interstellar space travel becomes possible). The goal of these missions is to “seed” these planets with human life and much of earth’s organics.

This is a pretty good story about one of the earlier re-seed colonies (which successfully created a culture reminiscent of 18th century Hawaii….. albeit technically advanced). This 500 year old utopia is visited by the final earth re-seed mission which is still on its way to another destination.

Story’s background is well developed and the relationships depicted between the two re-seed cultures are very believable. Good read. Would make a good sci-fi tv series.

Hero of the Soviet Union Dmitriy Loza has carefully crafted his World War II experiences with U.S.-provided Sherman tanks into a highly readable memoir. Following the German surrender, Loza’s unit was sent to Mongolia, where it participated in the arduous trek across the Gobi Desert to attack the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria.

This is the first available detailed examination of the Red Army’s exploitation of U.S. war matériel during World War II and one of the first genuine memoirs available from the Russian front. Loza also provides firsthand testimony on tactical command decisions, group objectives and how they were accomplished, and Soviet use of combat equipment and intelligence. Only after the collapse of the USSR and concomitant relaxing of prohibitions against publication of materials related to the Lend-Lease Program there could this account be made available.

Another view of WWII combat

Colonel Loza commanded a unit of M4 Sherman tanks in the Red Army against the Nazis on the Eastern Front in WWII. Much maligned in most accounts, the "emcha", as the Russians called it, served very well for their purposes. The USSR received thousands of Shermans from the US as part of FDR's plan to support the Russian war effort. As told by Colonel Loza, the Sherman had a number of advantages over its German opponents. The Sherman was highly reliable, able to operate for long intervals with minimum maintenance. Complex German tanks, on the other hand, were in need of constant repair and servicing. Also, the Shermans had superior cross-country mobility, allowing them to cover ground that their opponents couldn't cross. This also gave them avenues of approach that the Germans sometimes left open, certain that tanks couldn't negotiate the terrain. Finally, the version of the Sherman that the Russians used had dual diesel engines. By running on only one engine, they had reduced speed, but also a very reduced noise signature. This permitted the Russians to make several successful night attacks on unsuspecting German units, sneaking up to practically point-blank range, where the German tanks' superior armor and firepower were negated.

After Germany's defeat, Colonel Loza's unit was transferred to Mongolia to chase the remaining Japanese units from Manchuria and to accept their surrender. Although they didn't see any real combat, the Shermans were on the road for extended periods covering the vast desert landscape, and their reliability was a real virtue.

This book is written in an engaging first person style, and reads almost like a novel rather than history. WWII fans and history buffs will definitely want to add this to their lists. Enthusiastically recommended.

Decent overview, poor organization

It has the information for basic controls, but the organization is tough for beginners to follow. It is just tough to read through, and I am one who reads many EE and math books cover to cover.

I don't like hydrogen peroxide when it's taken orally

I don't like hydrogen peroxide when it's taken orally. It's not made for drinking. It can give you headaches for a months to years and is a mutagen, which means it should be handled like a carcinogen.
