Now in a new edition—the most comprehensive, hands-on introduction to digital signal processing

The first edition of Digital Signal Processing and Applications with the TMS320C6713 and TMS320C6416 DSK is widely accepted as the most extensive text available on the hands-on teaching of Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Now, it has been fully updated in this valuable Second Edition to be compatible with the latest version (3.1) of Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio (CCS) development environment. Maintaining the original's comprehensive, hands-on approach that has made it an instructor's favorite, this new edition also features:

  • Added program examples that illustrate DSP concepts in real-time and in the laboratory

  • Expanded coverage of analog input and output

  • New material on frame-based processing

  • A revised chapter on IIR, which includes a number of floating-point example programs that explore IIR filters more comprehensively

  • More extensive coverage of DSP/BIOS

  • All programs listed in the text—plus additional applications—which are available on a companion CD-ROM

No other book provides such an extensive or comprehensive set of program examples to aid instructors in teaching DSP in a laboratory using audio frequency signals—making this an ideal text for DSP courses at the senior undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It also serves as a valuable resource for researchers, DSP developers, business managers, and technology solution providers who are looking for an overview and examples of DSP algorithms implemented using the TMS320C6713 and TMS320C6416 DSK.

Review
"While there are numerous texts on DSP, this one is very useful due to the succinct style of presentation and the inclusion of many illustrative programming examples and student projects. The typesetting and layout are praiseworthy, and the coverage of topics is laudable." (Computing Reviews, October 1, 2008)

very practical DSP Book.
By Morsi
this book is quite excellent, and it is for me that i learn by doing and practise, this book suits me well.
the CD has all material required, i was hoping it would cover more labview but unfortunately it is still having the old example from the first edition,
which only works with very old version of labview, i got it to work with labview 7.1, i don't blame the author for that, because National instruments
labview stopped supporting Ti6713 after version 8.6 if i'm not mistaken.
but more examples would have been nice, the same thing for matlab, only one example included and i guess again that it is the same old example.
all in all, i'm still quite pleased with this book, and i put my old first edition for sale.
good luck every body learning DSP.

A gentle, yet thorough Introduction to DSP for the TMS320C6713 and TMS320C6416
By Mario Ghecea
This is the 2nd edition of the book by Rulph Chassaing and Donals Reay...I don't have the first edition so I cannot comment on the differences. This book is a lime green and black cover. Very appealing! I am surprised just how gentle the book steps through the subject matter before it gets heavy into IIR, FIR, FFT and Adaptive Filters. I haven't reached the end of the book yet. I'm going through every excercise and I find them helpful as I go along, sort of building blocks that depend upon one another. The book is incremental in the order of difficulty. I'm sure some of the DSP experts can jump around, but that is not my tactic with this book. DSP is not for the faint hearted. This book is definitelly 100% geek oriented, technical and to the point. I'm am going through it cover to cover. I love the excercises with the GEL capabilities. They are nice, because they are not just static pieces of code. They introduce dynamics to what otherwise could be just another boring fixed frequency and gain sinusoid. The authors seem to be very thorough on the waveform generation portion. Methods used are LUTs, Mathematically Generated, Matlab generated and imported waveforms (very nice approach). Some approaches I have not seen before and I'm glad the authors chose to be very experimental about their sinusoid generation. There are fun excercises spread throughout this book, I can clearly see this gazing through the chapters and I cannot wait to get to the more exciting chapters such as building an FFT based graphic equalizer, speach synthesizer, digital quadrature encoder and so much more. I will probably come back throughout time and give a more adequate review of the book, but in my opinion, it is well laid out and although not particularly a beginner's journey through DSP, I would say why not? Just grab "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" by Richard G. Lyons and additionally "Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB" by Proakis to get you through the tougher maths and some Matlab based proofs. There are some Matlab excercises toward the end of the book in the last few chapters. This book is generally intended for senior Undergrad or first year Graduate course in Computer Engineering. It requires knowledge of some C and linear equations. I found it very straighforward to understand with some help from the afforementioned books from Lyons and Proakis. Watch out for some small directory issues with the DSK. Depending on which version you use it may be a little pesky having to change endianess in the compiler options. I found I had to do that for every example in the book. Tidious, but not the end of the world. It's not the authors fault. I think more of a project compatability issue with the older DSKs. The price to update to the latest DSK is $99.00 on the Spectrum Digital site. Maybe worth it to some folks to upgrade or get the latest DSKs. I also find it interesting that in at least one of the chapters in the book the authors mention wiring up two DSKs one for signal generation and another for detection! All I have to say to that is...Are you kidding me? That's > $1K in DSKs...Either way, I'm going to purchase the second one, I can see that it is necessary. Couldn't a sound card be used to generate the required signal patterns? Am I missing something...Ugh! Anyway, great book and kudos for the authors. I'm sure many folks in DSP will find this useful and will write more thorough reviews than I've been able to write to this point! I will write more on the next pass...Enjoy your TMS320C6713/TMS320C6416 and your Chassaing/Reay DSP tutorials! They are worth every penny and they make DSP learning fun and less painful!

Great textbook for a Nutrition class.
By Amazon Customer
Great textbook for a Nutrition class or learning about nutrition. The only reason I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 is only because it's paperback and I prefer hard covers especially for textbooks . Mostly because of the constant flipping through the pages back and forth.

That's Why We Don't Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things, by Ruby Roth

That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals uses colorful artwork and lively text to introduce vegetarianism and veganism to early readers (ages six to ten). Written and illustrated by Ruby Roth, the book features an endearing animal cast of pigs, turkeys, cows, quail, turtles, and dolphins. These creatures are shown in both their natural state—rooting around, bonding, nuzzling, cuddling, grooming one another, and charming each other with their family instincts and rituals—and in the terrible conditions of the factory farm. The book also describes the negative effects eating meat has on the environment. A separate section entitled “What Else Can We Do?” suggests ways children can learn more about the vegetarian and vegan lifestyles, such as:“Celebrate Thanksgiving with a vegan feast” or “Buy clothes, shoes, belts, and bags that are not made from leather or other animal skins or fur.” This compassionate, informative book offers both an entertaining read and a resource to inspire parents and children to talk about a timely, increasingly important subject.

From Booklist
Some may consider this an attempt to indoctrinatethe young, but in truthit’s a courageous stab at a serious topic inherently hinted at through the anthropomorphizing of animals so prevalent in children’s books. By contrasting animal behavior in the wild with that of their counterparts in farms or factories, Roth makes a stark case that by harvesting sentient beings we are stripping them of their rights and natural desires. For example, wild turkeys “fly to the treetops to roost for the night,” but factory-farm turkeys are simply fattened until their wings become useless. Roth uses her own illustrations rather than photos, but she wisely doesnot make her animals too cute. Be warned: herdepictions of poultry confined within filthy cages, while abstract, are fairly disturbing. Inevitably this will bookincense those on the other side of the issue but there is much to be learned here (about animal behavior if nothing else). A unique effort that is to be applauded. Grades 3-6. --Daniel Kraus

Review
“This is a powerful and important book. Farm animals have emotions similar to our pets and this is conveyed in Roth's enchanting illustrations. It will make children—and their parents—think. But it will not lead to nightmares, rather respect and compassion for the creatures whose wellbeing is in our hands.”
—Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace

“A refreshing, sympathetic, and attractive book that children are smart enough to understand, embrace and grow up a little by reading.”
—Ingrid Newkirk, founder, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

“Ruby Roth has done us all a great service. If your children are vegetarians, or have friends who are, or are simply interested in why people might be vegetarians, this is the book for them!”
—John Robbins, bestselling author of The Food Revolution, Diet For A New America

“Where adults are more firmly entrenched in their ways, children need only the slightest insights and guidance, and off they soar into the direction of a more conscious and kind way of living. This book will help to create the much needed healers and leaders of tomorrow. ”
—Kathy Freston, NY Times bestselling author of Quantum Wellness

“Like many people, I knew as a child that I didn't want to eat animals. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals would have offered me the guidance and inspiration I needed to understand those instincts. This book is a must-have for anyone who loves animals.”
—Alicia Silverstone, actress, animal-rights activist

“In a time when we are all working to go green, I am thrilled that That's Why We Don't Eat Animals makes the connection between food and the environment, inspiring children to be aware and involved. ”
—Ed Begley, actor, activist

“Stunning artwork, meaningful content, and a message that will inspire-this book is a must-read for every child. ”
—Rory Freedman, NY Times bestselling author of Skinny Bitch

“Roth beautifully illustrates why we all love animals when we get the chance to experience their families and personalities. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is a book I recommend to all parents and children. ”
—David Wolfe, author of The Sunfood Diet Success System, founder of SunFood

“This book captures the imagination with its illustrations that subtly helps children understand the ancient teachings that animals have souls. Animals are our friends and we do not eat our friends. In this understanding it helps us create a more compassionate world. ”
—Gabriel Cousens, M.D. author of Conscious Eating, and Spiritual Nutrition

"Declaring that 'All animals deserve the care and protection we give our pets,' newcomer Roth takes the vegetarian/vegan cause to young readers. Highly stylized illustrations against white backdrops depict angular caricatures of farm animals. Concluding with a list of tips for action around vegetarian/vegan ideals, this book is sure to raise awareness and questions."
—Publishers Weekly

"A courageous stab at a serious topic inherently hinted at through the anthropomorphizing of animals so prevalent in children’s books. By contrasting animal behavior in the wild with that of their counterparts in farms or factories, Roth makes a stark case that by harvesting sentient beings we are stripping them of their rights and natural desires. Inevitably this will book incense those on the other side of the issue but there is much to be learned here (about animal behavior if nothing else). A unique effort that is to be applauded."
—Booklist

"This book successfully tackles the tough subject [of veganism] with grace and clarity. This is a great addition to any compassionate kid’s library and will make a wonderful gift for any parents in your life who want to talk to their kids about animals but need a little help getting started."
—PETA Living

“That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals succeeds in raising awareness about where our food comes from and how our food choices affect other creatures and the environment. Roth touches on the conditions animals raised on factory farms endure…but she doesn’t get overly graphic…That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals nicely connected the dots between how humans treat animals and the impact our species has on the planet as a whole, with the basic premise being that a more enlightened attitude toward our food sources (of course, ideally that would mean becoming vegetarian) translates into a healthier planet.”
—Wired

"Turkeys dance and grieve together; they blush and fly to the treetops when the moon comes out. In factory farms they have no freedom and are made too fat to fly."
—Kirkus

“The artwork is bright and enchanting...the message is clear, simple, and compassionate.”
—Change.org

“If each parent read this book to their child, I’m certain more children would consider becoming vegetarian.”
—Vegetarian Journal

“That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is an elegantly written, beautifully illustrated children's book about the rationale for vegetarianism. [Roth] uses heartfelt, emotionally resonant language and art design to contrast the life lived by animals in the wild with the existence of animals in the factory farming system. This is a children's book with large ambitions...If the coming generations are going to strive for a more sustainable approach to filling their dining room tables, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals should certainly be in their bookcases.”
—L.A. Yoga

“You can never be too young to join the fight against cruelty, and Roth's book looks like a great tool to help teach the younger generation about what's happening on factory farms.”
—This Just In, VegNews blog

“An American teacher, writer and artist, Roth has come up with an innovative and somewhat controversial solution for helping children foster compassion towards animals-tell them the truth. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things is the first book of its kind targeted toward young people. A candid, but gentle book that discusses what are normally considered taboo subjects for children, such as factory farming, battery hen cages, overfishing, habitat erosion, rainforest health and endangered species in relation to food.”
—Green Muze

“The illustrations are fantastic, and the message is spot on.”
—Vegan Dad blog

"The text does a fine job of explaining this potentially emotional issue without being too fraught with horrifying detail. Ruby Roth is a talented illustrator and author who has written a gently informative children's book that will be indispensable to thoughtful families everywhere. I am so grateful to her for making that inevitable talk a little bit easier."
—Your Vegan Mom

“That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals makes the case for both vegetarianism and veganism with gorgeous artwork and a clear, firm stance about the needs of animals and the peril to the greater environment.”
—Vegan Future blog

“[That's Why We Don't Eat Animals] makes a sound, green argument for reducing animal consumption as well as eliminating factory farms. It offers another perspective that is missing from children's sections in libraries. It is a pleasure to find such a well-done book on the subject”
—Kids Lit blog

“Though this book tackles a difficult subject for younger children, it does so well. This is a good book for vegetarian families or parents who are raising their kids veggie and want a way to explain it to them. Without getting too graphic (animals in confined cages are as dark as it gets), it explores basic issues of factory farming and discusses its effects on the environment. Roth is able to get her point across without becoming too preachy or delving into topics that aren't age-appropriate.
—The Kids' Book Corner blog

“Wonderfully illustrated and inspiring for children of all ages, author Ruby Roth has tackled the complex moral and ethical issue of choosing to be a vegetarian, distilling it into a compassionate and informative snapshot of the emotional lives of animals in their natural state. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is a timely reminder to look inside our hearts and reconsider the choices we make-and their impact on our fellow creatures and the well-being of the planet.”
—New Consciousness Review

“For any parent looking for a children’s book to introduce some arguments on choosing the vegetarian lifestyle, That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals is a great start.”
—Vegetarian Star

“[That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals] was not grotesque or militant in any way… just straightforward about the reality of eating animals and what that means for the animals and the planet…Thumbs up to Ruby Roth, That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals rocks!”
—Nature Moms

“That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals is quickly becoming a must-have book!”
—Ecorazzi

“Each animal on a farm is contrasted with the animal in its natural, social habitat through entertaining drawings…Research for the book was collected from zoologists, animal behaviorists, neuropsychiatrists, pet therapy programs, oceanographers, farmers and animal sanctuaries…”
—The Washington Times

“It is good to finally have a book that portrays the philosophy of veganism as a reasoned, principled belief and not as a fickle food choice.”
—New Age Journal

“The text confronts kids head-on with questions that will get them thinking…”
—Heeb’n’Vegan

“[That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals] is heirloom quality and destined to be read over and over again.”

—Huffington Post

“[Ruby Roth’s] stunning artwork mesmerizes readers… this book is sure to be a wonderful conversation starter between children and their adult counterparts for many story times to come.”
—VegBooks

“Get this book! Ruby Roth's That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is quickly gaining acclaim and recognition… a welcome addition to the vegetarian and vegan landscape.”
—LifeTips.com

“The book illustrates in a gentle yet powerful way, the reasons why some Earthlings choose not to eat meat. It is a beautiful book about compassion.”

“The graphics are amazing… this book is not only a great tool for teaching your kids why they are vegetarian or vegan but also to teach adults and others why it is important not to eat meat.”
—Cooking for a Vegan Lover

“If you are planning on raising a vegetarian child who will be well-prepared to explain his or her beliefs to inquiring peers, teachers, and friends’ parents, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is a great start… The animals are charmingly drawn in a caricaturist, almost geometric style, and their environments are depicted with bright or dark colors, depending on their living conditions. The vocabulary is simple and straightforward, doesn’t get too dark or complicated for children, and avoids a preachy, overbearing tone in favor of a sensitive, informative one.”
—Feminist Review

“Roth’s artistry brings the story to life through color and rigid form.”
—Farmbrarian

“Ruby’s beautiful illustrations are colorful and whimsical, and they have a way of keeping my daughter’s eyes glued to the page! ... This is by far the most gentle, yet eye opening, animal rights book available for our youngest generation!”
—The Vegan Mom

“[That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals is] a delightful, beautifully illustrated guide to some of the world’s most pressing topics—from health to environment to animal protection—for children ages 4-10.”
—Elephant Journal

“Roth created her new illustrated book, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals, for elementary school aged children, exploring topics such as factory farming, overfishing and rainforest destruction in a manner that is truthful, yet age-appropriate.”
—Compassionate Living Magazine

“Roth gently discusses what is wrong with the way we raise food… If each parent read this book to their child, I'm certain more children would consider becoming vegetarian.”
—Vegetarian Resource Group

“A book written for children and their families, That's Why We Don't Eat Animals is just as vital an addition to the veg-friendly library as John Robbin's The Food Revolution or Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals, because its simple, yet profound message—that the animals of this world have as much a desire to live and love their families as we do—is enough to become a seed of change for good in the hearts of children and grown-ups alike. I've never seen a book that handles the subject of factory farming, overfishing, and the destruction of our fellow animals and planet so delicately.”
—Kiss Me, I'm Vegan

“I recently began my search for a simple, clear children's book about vegetarianism. I wanted something more than a story about an unrealistic, cartoon animal, as well as a story that touched on the environment and American factory farms… I was really happy to find That's Why We Don't Eat Animals by Ruby Roth.”
—Erin, MN Veggie Mama

“That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals is a milestone in children’s literature.”
—Vegetarians in Paradise

“Ruby's illustrations are just superb. She has an abstract style and the animals are almost, but not quite, painted in caricature. I commend her for making a visually pleasing book while not shying away from the realities of animal use. That's Why We Don't Eat Animals covers just about every aspect of animal exploitation, and does it in a sensitive way that breaks the awful truth to our children as easily as possible.”
—Raw on $10 a Day (or Less!)

"A gorgeously illustrated children’s book that we are just mad for."
—The GirlieGirl Army

Good
By Christy
I bought this for my three-year old, but he is emotionally not ready for this. But, he is a child that was mortified by a baby-einstein video when the duck puppet fell down. The book puts approximately equal weight on the positive (happy things the animals do in their natural environ) and the negative (poor conditions of factory farming). The book includes non-graphic, but sad images of animals in factory-farm conditions such as tiny, cramped cages. This would devastate my child at his current age, but I think as he gets older, he'll mature into it. In a few years, I'll show him this book. It's a simple statement of here's the animal in nature and what the animal needs and then here's how the animal is treated in a factory farm.

It's a great idea for older kids. It's also a good, quality hardcover.

Mixed feelings
By KayM
I bought this book because I wanted a child friendly book for my 5 yr old to discuss the reasons we choose to be vegetarian. The illustrations are well done, though a little dark sometimes. I have very honest age appropriate discussions with my child, but debated reading this to her at first. I cringed at the pic of turkeys stuffed into dirty cages with wounds. However, I read it to her and had a really beautiful talk with her about how animals must feel on farms like the ones in the pictures. The words were beautiful and thoughtful, though my child probably won't absorb them (for slightly older children) for a few yrs. There's a large emphasis on animals families that made the book appealing to me.

Beautifully written and illustrated
By Cdeckro
While this book is beautifully illustrated and informative to young readers I returned because my son was a bit to old for the level of content. Perfect for young children to be read to or early self readers. It isn't scary but rather helps young readers understand that animals are here with us and not for us and that they deserve to live life to the fullest with their families and friends and in a loving and caring environment. I hope all young readers discover this book at some point! My son is 10 1/2. The content was not new to him. If this is new content for your older child then go for this, it is a great intro to vegan lifestyle, otherwise I would say it may be better suited for younger readers.

From Library Journal
James Allen "Al" Hendrix has outlived his son Jimi by 29 years, which must haunt him on every birthday. Al turns 80 on Father's Day, but he is not looking for anyone's sympathy or taking credit for Jimi's genius, as the biography's sappy promos suggest. Thankfully, no slick editors have touched Al's winding oral history of Jimi's family, Al's failed marriage to Lucille Jeter (Jimi's alcoholic, live-fast-die-young mother), Jimi's childhood, his premature death, and Al's legal battle for Jimi's estate in the 1990s. Al has also opened the Hendrix family photo album and Jimi's boyhood sketchbooks, which are full of cowboys and Indians, Elvis, car races, and rock'n'roll concerts. Although Jimi had the healthy imagination of a normal, happy kid, he did not come from such a secure background: Al worked like a dog while Lucille slept around, and Jimi was raised by his aunts, uncles, and grandmothers. Al makes no excusesAhe didn't spend enough time with Jimi, but he did buy him his first three guitars. An earnest tribute; recommended for all popular music collections.AHeather McCormack, "Library Journal"

From Booklist
Guitar god Jimi Hendrix is the hook for his dad's story. But the rock-star portion of Jimi's life doesn't crop up until page 136, and before then, Dad's life in the Pacific Northwest is its focus. James A. "Al" Hendrix experienced incredible personal upheaval, casual but pervasive racism, and the economic challenges that upheaval and racism only intensify. Yet he persevered as a committed single father. He first heard the Jimi Hendrix Experience when the "hippies who lived next door" played Are You Experienced? loud enough to penetrate his walls. He was surprised to recognize his son's voice because "I'd never heard him sing before," but then, Jimi surprised a lot of people with that album. Folksy, uninhibited, highly readable, Al's book fleshes out the Jimi Hendrix story as it grittily portrays a strong African American father. Al now chairs the company that manages rights to Jimi's music, image, and licensing. He misses his son, but "when I hear Jimi's music today, it makes me feel good." Legions of rock fans agree on both counts. Mike Tribby

A much needed perspective on Jimi's life
By Bruce Newman
I bought this book yesterday and finished it today. I have always felt, for reasons I could never really explain, that Jimi had a kindred spirit with my own. His father's recollections on Jimi's early life let me know why. I'm so glad Mr. Al Hendrix wrote this book. The lies about Jimi are legion. I remember in the 60's that most of what I heard about him had to do with drugs. It's a real shame that you have to explore a person's life like a detective (in a country with a supposedly "free" press) to find out what they were really like. There is one thing I really liked about the Hendrix family the book revealed; their free and easy interactions with non-blacks. No wonder Jimi's music and message was universal. In a time when blacks and whites seem to be once again withdrawing into their own groups I found the Hendrix family to be very refreshing. Being black myself I totally reject the pressures brought against me to participate only in things stamped with the "black" seal of approval. And I'd like to salute Al Hendrix for being a real father and taking care of his family, even children he didn't sire. A lot of men today wouldn't do what he did. Jimi was very fortunate to have such a father and I think he knew it. Thank you Mr. Hendrix for sharing your life and that of your son with us on a more intimate level. I for one will always love Jimi and hold a fondness for him in my heart. And now for you as well.

Al's 'Bad' Memory
By Dr. Steven Maddox
I know it's wrong to criticise the dead, but this book is very much written through bright rosey red coloured spectacles. Al was getting on in years when he collaborated on this book and I suspect a lot of it was very much taken from one-to-one chats between Al and his 'ghost writer'; but unfortunately the book appears to have been very much influenced by the step -daughter from hell (and not a blood relative of Jimi)....one Janie Hendrix. Therefore, although Al's early memories of Jimi as a child and early adolescent are interesting and have some value, his assertions that Leon was not his child and how much Jimi was fond of his 'little sister Janie' devalue the rest of the book. Even if Leon was not Al's child, he was Lucille's son and that makes him Jimi's blood half-brother....which is a damn site closer to Jimi than Janie will ever be (he only met Janie on a couple of occasions)...........I suspect that Janie poisoned Al's mind at the time that this book was written with one thing in mind...Al's will and inheritance and the control of Jimi's music...which all spells one word......GREED. Unfortunately her scheming paid off, as Al effectively disowned Leon and gifted more or less evrything to Janie (including the rights to Jimi's music).

Finally, I am sure Al loved Jimi in his own way and I am sure Jimi had some affection for Al, but it is all overplayed in this book and Jimi told a lot of people that Al beat him quite badly when he was growing up and Kathy Etchingham in particular recalls a number of occasions when Al was not exactly a loving father..........however times were very hard for Al and Jimi (and Leon) and it is unfair to be too hard on Al in the early days....and to some degree in later life when I suspect he was slightly senile and therefore very susceptible to Janie's worm tonguery.

Surprisingly low-key personality for a rock star!!!
By Peter
I liked it and I read it in 2 days. I was amazed to read that jimi Hendrix, an all time rock and roll star, was by his dad's account, such an even keeled, mild-mannered, and generous person. So impressive given as per dads account that his mom was a self-involved, reckless, and absentee parent and dad was a transient mainly benevolent old soul forever trying to find his way as well. I did expect to learn more about jimi and the music direction he chose, the kinds of things that he was passionate about and other stuff about his rock experience. I did laugh when I read that hendrix's dad thought the Beatles were little girls when he first saw and heard them on TV-which was after he heard his own sons first album. I also laughed when I read about how jimi told his dad to not worry about his terrible singing as "all the music then featured a driving beat with a singer who was just shouting and not singing with any sense of melody or tone". Would have liked to hear more about jimis band experience while living with his dad-up until he went to the army.

The Great Crash 1929, by John Kenneth Galbraith

Of Galbraith's classic examination of the 1929 financial collapse, the Atlantic Monthly said:"Economic writings are seldom notable for their entertainment value, but this book is. Galbraith's prose has grace and wit, and he distills a good deal of sardonic fun from the whopping errors of the nation's oracles and the wondrous antics of the financial community." Now, with the stock market riding historic highs, the celebrated economist returns with new insights on the legacy of our past and the consequences of blind optimism and power plays within the financial community.

Amazon.com Review
Rampant speculation. Record trading volumes. Assets bought not because of their value but because the buyer believes he can sell them for more in a day or two, or an hour or two. Welcome to the late 1920s. There are obvious and absolute parallels to the great bull market of the late 1990s, writes Galbraith in a new introduction dated 1997. Of course, Galbraith notes, every financial bubble since 1929 has been compared to the Great Crash, which is why this book has never been out of print since it became a bestseller in 1955.

Galbraith writes with great wit and erudition about the perilous actions of investors, and the curious inaction of the government. He notes that the problem wasn't a scarcity of securities to buy and sell; "the ingenuity and zeal with which companies were devised in which securities might be sold was as remarkable as anything." Those words become strikingly relevant in light of revenue-negative start-up companies coming into the market each week in the 1990s, along with fragmented pieces of established companies, like real estate and bottling plants. Of course, the 1920s were different from the 1990s. There was no safety net below citizens, no unemployment insurance or Social Security. And today we don't have the creepy investment trusts--in which shares of companies that held some stocks and bonds were sold for several times the assets' market value. But, boy, are the similarities spooky, particularly the prevailing trend at the time toward corporate mergers and industry consolidations--not to mention all the partially informed people who imagined themselves to be financial geniuses because the shares of stock they bought kept going up. --Lou Schuler

Review
"[A] skilled analysis of that most memorable year in our economic history." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch )

"Most intriguing for its depiction of the delusion that swept the culture, and the ways financiers and bankers, wishful academics and supine regulators willfully ignored reality and in the process encouraged the epic collapse of the stock market." (New York Times )

"Paints a vivid picture of how the supposedly rational capitalist system seemed to lose its collective mind, and it has spooky parallels with what we are witnessing now." (Fortune )

Great introduction to a very turbulent and complex time in US economic history.
By Boston suburban dweller
Wonderful read. JKG is a great writer, and keeps the story going through what could be labor-some or dry economic topics. Best audience is someone interested in markets & willing to think along the way. It's not a thriller or such, where you just sit back and read. JKG likely does not get "passive" or inattentive readers. If you want to gain a perspective on what happened in 1929, you'll need to read many, many books to gain a full understanding. This is a great quick intro.

Fantastic book
By C. Eldredge
This book is an extremely clear account of the stock market bubble and disastrous crash of the late 1920s. I have read quite a few financial histories, and they are often quite difficult going. However, Mr. Galbraith's account is a pleasure to read, not least because of his very dry wit. The major drawback to the book is that despite the fact that it has been continuously in print since 1955, we have kept on falling into the same trap over and over, leading to unhappy thoughts about our wise leaders.

Must read
By Bob Garey
I've just read this book for the third time in the last 30 years. It is eerily relevant to understanding the financial markets, including the post-bubble declines after 2000 and 2007, as it is 1929 and the years immediately after. Also, it is the opposite of dry reading. Enjoyable, understandable, and enlightening. You won't regret reading it.
