About the Author
E. L. KERSTEN is the co-founder of Despair, Inc., a publishing and media enterprise dedicated to the dissemination of contrarian wisdom. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Communication from the University of Southern California and is the author of several of the company's popular Demotivators� products.

Kersten spent the early part of his professional career as a university professor, holding teaching positions at the University of Southern California, California State University (Frescno) and City University of New York, among others. In 1995, he was lured out of academia by a fledgling Dallas Internet startup. His experiences in the private sector managing the customer care operations for an explosive-growth ISP proved both tumultuous and transformational, ultimately inspiring the birth of Despair, Inc., in 1998.

He has been quoted by, appeared on, or written about in the Wall Street Journal, NPR's Marketplace, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, Washington Post, BusinessWeek, Time, and many other outlets. He is married and lives in Texas. --Biography

A Parody That Motivates

The author is the creator of the Despair posters. He uses sarcasm to bring out truth in management practice. This book does the same.

As I read, I found myself imagining some other executives I've worked with nodding their heads as they read the book and mumbling to themselves, "Yeah, that's right I should just tell them to shut up or I'll replace you." It's easy to imagine "the other guy" doing all these things. Just like as we read the usual leadership or management book we consider that we pretty much already do all that stuff anyway but maybe could apply a point or two. That's the trouble with humans, we easily see the faults of others but evaluate ourselves as pretty much okay.

Here's where the book got me... I starting seeing my own actions in Kersten's parody. I cringed and thought, "Oh, I do that!" Humbling. And instructive. I found it highly motivational and funny!

The Art of Demotivation is still in print and available. The author's web site also features hilarious video vignettes demonstrating the art of demotivation.

This is quite simply a hilarious book so long as you don't take it seriously -- or a very sad book since it seems like it describes common management practices already in use.

How Can I Help You?

Dr. Kersten has made a tidy business out of ripping the motivational industry a new one. I had thought that his riff would have run its course by now, but it sure seems to be going strong.

And that's something Dr. K earned. If all you know about [...] is the poster series, this (apparently hard-to-find) book will change your mind. Dr. K helps us understand that this generation of Human Resources practitioners have accepted an "Age of Shamans." Somehow we've been induced to accept buzzwords and platitudes as acceptable, or even desirable substitutes for common sense in treating people, not to mention the golden rule.

Take it from me, the guy's got something to say which you'd benefit hearing. He's not just about irony and cynicism [although I confess to enjoying that, too].

Learn ethnography by doing ethnography.

This ethnography book does not read like a textbook, and it is not intended to be one. Instead, it is a project manual, briefly outlining five ethnographic assignments, and then including a number of papers from various students as examples.
The book is deliberately low on theory, and approaches ethnography from a more postmodern point of view, encouraging students to be reflexive and to write of their personal experiences and emotions. At the same time, the author states the importance of separating data from analysis, to help the ethnographer be more objective. The analysis of the data, where the ethnographer interprets the motives and emotions, is important but separate. He also gives further readings at the end of each assignment, knowing that this book does not go into much depth in either theory or practice.
The whole purpose of this book is teach ethnography by doing ethnography. The first three assignments are short and are designed to get the inexperienced student started in ethnography. The project descriptions are only about two pages long, and then each assignment has several example papers. The first is the map and description of a block, the second is a retrospective assignment on private language, and the third assignment is to study body language. All of these assignments help to sharpen the eye of the student in areas where they need to be observant.
The final two assignments are much bigger. One is a study on ritual, and the final assignment Kutsche calls "The Big Ethnography." This project is designed to last about a month. The final 100 pages of the book are devoted to eight exemplary student ethnographies.
Although the book was enjoyable to read, its strength really would come from actually doing the assignments, and if a class were not willing to do so, I think another book would be more appropriate. It is designed for an introductory class in ethnography, and is not written to be a reference for a field ethnographer, or for an advanced ethnography student.
In general I found the book somewhat refreshing in that it had short descriptions of the assignments, and then lots of case studies. For an introductory class in ethnography, it could be a good book if the professor was willing to have the students go through the assignments. But I would recommend the professor read the book through first before deciding to use it as a project manual.

Ever since my boyfriend and I started dating, we've been doing the study guide together. We love the discussion it presents for us--despite how uncomfortable it can be sometimes, it's awesome because it forces us to open up and be honest about some perspectives and see what God has to say on it all. It's been really edifying for us to talk to our friends about some things. We've even gotten other couples to start it and so it makes for a good transparent group to be accountable with. Very thankful for it. God has this book to really reveal a lot of His design for us.

Great study for couples

Great study for couples. It doesn't matter if you are a Christian, non-Christian, single, newly married, or married for 50 years, this study has great application for all. I definitely recommend the DVD also. Matt Chandler will keep you entertained while teaching life application for a healthy Godly marriage or prepping for that marriage you want in the future. If you want to know what God has intended for your marriage look no further.

It does not parse the Scripture like Tommy Nelson did in his “Song of Solomon” study but had more application. If you are looking to really dig into the details of each verse I’d highly recommend Tommy Nelson over this.

Note: You need to get the DVDs to follow along with the study guide. This book doesn't follow the actual book very well. With that said it was a good book for my husband and I to go through together it offered some good questions and I would say we enjoyed it overall.

Eighteen in-depth essays illustrate the theoretical discussion with primary sources and include case studies of key cult inscriptions from Kyrene, Kos, and Miletos. This volume features maps, tables, and over twenty images to support and expand on the text, and will provide conceptual tools for understanding the actions and beliefs that constitute a religion. Additionally, Larson offers the first detailed discussion of cognition and memory in the transmission of Greek religious beliefs and rituals, as well as a glossary of terms and a bibliographical essay on the cognitive science of religion.

nice try

despite the good idea for this book and many relevant thoughts, John Dunn manages to put many simple things in an extremely complicated manner, with sentences so long and complex, that one should sometimes doubt that this book is recommended for the general reader. Often jumping from one doubtful philosophical concept to another and thereby constantly referring to theorists whose ideas lead to further digressions, it is often hard to follow John Dunn in his line of thought. As to the Tribune's review "Dunn writes like Mozart", I'm sure this particular journalist had no idea about classical music.

In this conclusion to the authorized sequels of Ian Fleming’s original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang series, Boyce takes the Tooting family back to 1966 to see England win the World Cup. Amazing motorized machine Chitty Chitty Bang Bang sends the Tooting family to the moon in an out-of-this-world fun adventure. The third title in the series approved by original creator Ian Fleming’s estate, CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG: Over the Moon includes time travel, harrowing escapes, space travel and wonderful illustrations that bring the characters and mighty car to vivid life.

The story begins with the Tootings stranded in 1966 London, just before the only winning World Cup Final for England. Lucy does not like the micro miniskirts or psychedelic colors, and wants to try and find Chitty with her brothers. Her parents are desperate to see the match, or at least be close to it outside the stadium. When the whole family goes for a ride in the Queen’s Royal car, they realize they are missing Little Harry. While they are in the car, they also witness the famous Big Ben tower take off like a rocket.

They encounter the Potts family, who owned Chitty back when it was green in the 1960’s, and learn that the Potts parents are with Chitty, Little Harry and villain Tiny Jack --- in Big Ben. The two Potts children team up with the Tootings to try and rescue them, only to watch as Chitty is mashed into a tiny cube.

Mr. Tooting is able to fix her in a funny scene involving special paint and time travel, and soon they are flying to the North Pole, only to find Big Ben but no family members. They rendezvous with Tiny Jack on his spaceship and realize he has stolen many of the world’s greatest treasures, including gold Chitty from modern times. They also find the elder Potts couple and Little Harry. Tiny Jack and his evil Nanny force them all to celebrate Tiny’s birthday, and the Tootings realize that they harmed Tiny when they last left him by himself in New York City. He would have preferred to spend his life playing hide and seek in the rainforest as outlined in a previous book.

Tiny Jack convinces several of them to take him to the moon in Chitty for his birthday and they do so, only to have him steal the Moon Buggy and leave them stranded. Meanwhile, the older Chitty is commandeered by Jem and the others who did not travel with Tiny, and they embark on a rescue.

After the two families are reunited, they work together to return all the things Tiny stole, and to return him to a time when he was happy. The resolution of the time traveling is that the Potts must decide where --- and when --- they want to exist in a bittersweet ending.

At times the time travel is mind-bending, but the characters show depth and heart along with the magical car. Even Tiny Jack is shown to be a sympathetic character here. The illustrations add another level of creativity to this enjoyable read. The moon is a creative plot twist and readers will enjoy meeting some famous astronauts there. Fans of THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH and the original Ian Fleming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang story will especially appreciate this zany caper.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

When the Tootings family finds themselves trapped in the 60s, there’s nothing to but just enjoy it. Until they bump into Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the family that owned it in that era. The book starts out a little slow but then jumps right into the wacky adventures (at least I'd call chasing Big Ben and visiting the moon a bit on the wacky side).

Very few things top the original. This is no exception, but it’s still a good book especially for kids (of all ages). Technically it could be a stand alone book but I'd recommend reading the prior books first.
