About the Author
Gilbert Silvius is professor at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht in the Netherlands and principal consultant at Van Aetsveld, project and change management. He is founder and program director of the Master of Project Management program at HU and an active member of IPMA, PMI and the ISO TC258. Ron Schipperr is project manager and consultant at Van Aetsveld, project and change management. He has over 15 years of experience as a project manager in realizing change in various organizations. Next to executing projects, he is interested in developing the profession of project managers and transferring this knowledge to others. Julia Planko works as researcher and lecturer at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht since 2008. She lectures in Economics and Marketing and supervises students with sustainability related research projects. Julia studied International Business Management and International Economics and worked as associate lecturer at the Berlin School of Economics. . Jasper van den Brink is an experienced project and program manager. He joined HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht in 2008. Jasper specializes in training project management skills and the behavioral competences of (project) management. His research includes the application of modern psychological insights in project management. Adri Köhler is a senior consultant and project leader in the field of ICT and business operations. He was the project leader of the development of the Master of Project Management at HU and was course director of this program.

Well worth investment of time and money

I chose this book because I am designing a project management system for a large nonprofit organization and I wanted to get ideas on how to incorporate economic, social and environmental sustainability. The book served this purpose very well. I found it well written and I liked the graphics that easily laid out the authors' concepts.

short notes on a long journey

Unfortunately, this book is not comparable with Fleming's other travellogues, but a kind of diary written partly in short note form. Fleming wrote his diary in 1934, when he travelled from Moscow through the Caucasus, along the Turksib and the Transib, and finally through Japanese occupied Manchuria to Beijing. In particular, the last third of the book is a little exhausting to read, since is it not written any longer in full sentences, but only in headlines and abreviations.
The best and funniest part of the book are the footnotes, in which the author wittily comments on his own accomplishments when the books was first published twenty years later. Since this diary is certainly a unique document, it is a real pitty that Fleming did not use his notes to develop them into a fully fledged book like One's Company: A Journey to China in 1933 or News from Tartary: A Journey from Peking to Kashmir (Marlboro Travel). Instead, he forgot his notes in a drawer, and when he recovered them, he had lost all the details.

Great book for busy managers and students

This is a great book about a new topic called "Adaptive Business Intelligence". It is basically about modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) that is used to solve tough real-life optimization and prediction problems. The authors really know what they are talking about and have many years of business and teaching experience. They are also running a software company specializing in Adaptive Business Intelligence.

I was skeptical when I picked up this book and thought to myself that they can't possibly explain all those modern AI techniques without formulas. However, the book is very easy to read and really does cover modern AI techniques without getting into a lot of nitty gritty details (i.e., no formulas). They also have a detailed real-life example that they frequently refer to. The example is very good and I quickly saw how I could use Adaptive Business Intelligence.

The authors explain everything down to earth and on top of that it was fun to read and also reads well. I also liked that they have some references to other books in case you want to dive into a particular topic.

All in all it's a great book that makes modern science easy to understand for busy people. Even non-technical managers like myself will have no problems understanding the different techniques and how they apply to their own business. I highly recommend this book. It's definitely worth reading!

PS: I borrowed the book to my sister who studies IT in California and she told me that it's a great introduction to modern AI. She actually never returned the book since she kept as a reference for one of her classes.

Conceptual book, not good in practice

I use the book as a reference for one of my classes on analytics and decision support systems. The book has a good introduction to the topic, explains concepts well, but it lacks a good discussion on implementation and practical applications. It is not a book to learn how to do things in ABI. The authors develop a running example of an application of ABI systems in the car rental industry, but it is hard to see how that would translate into other applications. The adaptability chapter and discussions along the book are very short and not very insightful. In my class, I complement this book with other books on how to develop decision support systems using Visual Basic and prediction methods using the R statistical language.
