Not up to date as I would have liked

Tried using this as the primary textbook for a conversational English class at church and found out that it is best used to supplement other teaching methods. Its does provide a thorough covering of conversational English but many of the words are no longer used (at least in this generation). Even the slang words were not as up to date as I would have liked but we were able to contextualize some of the phrases as being more appropriate to different age groups. In the end, I still use this to determine a topic for each week, such as "Making Friends" or "Expressing Forgiveness" but then either develop my own lessons or use many of the free ESL worksheets and activites available online.

Doesn't work if you're between types

As a chronic insomniac, I was excited to read something that might offer new solutions. So I took the test and came out as a Dolphin, which seemed a perfect fit at first, since I am high strung and stay up at nights ruminating. But when I read further, lots of the what he said about dolphin didn't fit at all. I love to eat, for example (I've never forgotten a meal in my life, and sure wish I had that wiry thin body he talked about!). And far from getting a burst of evening energy, I generally feel so exhausted after 8pm I can barely string words together. So I seem to be hungry like a bear, high-strung like a dolphin, and rise early like a lion. What the heck am I? A Dol-bear-ion?

I had hoped buying the book would clear up for me what type I am, but it only further confounded me. And the advice for each type is wildly conflicting. Should I exercise in the morning like a Dolphin, or save it for afternoon, like a Lion, to give me more evening pep? Should I force myself to stay up till midnight (which would probably make me ill, is my guess), or go to bed with the sun? The advice conflicts so much that it only works if you fit neatly into one group or another.

This book clearly seems to be working for lots of people, but I'd recommend taking the online quiz before you buy it, and then reading through the descriptions of each of the types, first. If you find yourself to be a hybrid like me, you might as well skip the purchase and save your money.

EDITED TO ADD:

After finishing the book, there are a few pieces of advice that apply to any chronotype, that I wanted to share for those who feel, like me, that they don't fit into a specific type:

The first is to delay coffee until a couple of hours after awakening. According to the author, drinking caffeine immediately upon waking is a waste. For all types it's better to wait until you get an energy lull closer to mid-morning. On the other hand, no type should drink caffeine within eight hours of wanting to go to sleep, so don't wait too long. And limit yourself to one or two cups a day.

Second, no type should sleep in on the weekends. He's very firm about this. For all types, it's better to lose a bit of sleep on the weekends (if you're staying out late and socializing) then to sleep in and wind up with "social jetlag" which will throw off your entire week. The most anyone should sleep in is an extra 30-45 minutes.

Finally, for all types, use sunshine, exercise, protein, and cold showers when you want to wake yourself up or give yourself some extra pep. Then use warm baths, meditation, stretching, and carbs when you want the opposite, to be winding down and preparing for sleep. So, if you have trouble waking up in the morning, start out with some push ups (or whatever) followed by a cold shower, a walk outside, and a plate of eggs. If you get tired too early in the evenings and want to be able to stay up later, then use those things in the late afternoon. Conversely, if you are too alert in the evenings and have trouble falling asleep, then eat some carbs, stretch, meditate, and have a warm bath at or after dinner time.

That advice all seems pretty sound to me and it's the advice I'm taking from the book and applying, despite feeling like I don't fit neatly into a chronotype. He also has a chapter on adjusting to jet lag that some might find helpful.

This Book Will Change The Way You Think About Time, Sleep, Sex, Work Based On The Science Of Chronotypes

Dr. Michael Breus has written a book that will cause you to rethink virtually every area of your life. This book is about so much more than just time management and when to do things, it explores your Chronotype and breaks down more than 100 circadian patterns to discover your personal best time to do everything based on your chronotype.

The book starts with a simple quiz that helps you determine your Chronotype. Chronotype is the scientific study and classification of your personal biological energy patterns based on circadian rhythms. Everyone has a unique chronotype that determines your peak energy flows throughout the day. The book also helps you understand the positive combination of hormones with your peak energy states in every area of your life. By understanding the critical combination of hormone production and energy you can time the best time of the day to do everything.

After taking the quiz, I found out I was a bear chronotype. I've begun using the timing suggestions for when to sleep and wake up and when to be most effective in my work and so far, I've woken up more refreshed every day. It did require that I make a change to when I went to bed and got up. There is a formula for determining your best time to sleep based on your chronotype. I also moved as much of my work as I could that required strong problem solving into different areas of the day and it has made a significant difference in my ability to focus.

Each chapter focuses on a specific topic like when to exercise, when to have sex, when to focus on creative efforts, or when to sleep and breaks the chapter down for your chronotype. I like the specificity of each section for the chronotype. After a brief introduction to the topic of each chapter you can dig into what is relevant to you. It is important to read your spouse or partner's chronotype as well to better understand their daily patterns so that you can maximize or improve your interactions with them. I was surprised to find out that my chronotype should have sex on Saturday mornings!

I like this book because it is supported by evidence based studies. The title might make you think that it is based on pop psychology or made up idees, it is not. While very easy and fun to read, it brings serious science to bear and provides you with a great jumping off point if you want to dig into the research. I also like all the additional resources and video explanations on the authors website, he gives you more examples, details and exercises that you can do to become more efficient at maximizing your personal chronotype.

While I got an early review copy of the book, I found it so intriguing that I bought it for my employees and close family members. I really feel like this is a book that everyone needs to read to finally understand how and when to sleep and how to properly time their day to reach maximum effectiveness throughout the day.

Whatever it is its working

I am slowly implementing some suggestions like waking, commuting, work hours, delaying caffeine - even scheduling interactions with others according to what I think their chronotype might be. I have more energy later in the day, I am not snacking as much as I used to and I am paying more attention to other peoples moods - which I am sure they would appreciate if they knew. Ultimately even if this is placebo - its working and I think it is worth a try. I deducted a star because it assumes the working world works the day shift and doesn't address how to adjust your schedule if you are working a night shift. Maybe that's a new book.

HOW TO USE THE PLAYBOOK

As you flip through The Playbook you’ll notice that each play is presented in an easy-to-follow recipe format. This is done so that even a chump like you has a shot at glory. Immediately following the title of the play is a profile box that presents the following quick reference information:

Success Rate— the likelihood of “completing” the play

Attracts—the type of chick the play is designed to ensnare

Requirements—the props and/or special talents you’ll need

Prep Time—how much time you need to invest in the play

Bummers—potential negatives to running the play, other than “might totally fail”

Following the profile box are the numbered steps for each play. Simply follow them word for word with absolutely no deviation and you’ll get laid. Maybe.

Now, before you flip to a page and start trying out plays on random chicks, there are three things you need to consider.

LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION.

While most plays can be performed at a party or in your local bar, I recommend you workshop these plays elsewhere when you’re just getting your feet wet—if you have any hope of getting other areas wet. Beta-testing a play in a foreign environment safeguards you from any emotional damage, physical harm, or heaven forbid, your bros giving you crap for striking out.

MAD PROPS

Some of the plays entail wardrobe elements or other accessories that might not be readily available about the home. Therefore it’s a good idea to establish a relationship with a local party or costume shop owner. A good one will let you sample their wares at little to no cost if you promise to promptly return them. As a show of appreciation and good faith you should take extra care not to damage the costume, even as you’re climbing out the window of a girl you just duped into sleeping with you. It’s called integrity.

SKILL LEVEL

Some of the plays require a considerable amount of game while others entail almost no effort whatsoever … like The Michael Jordan or The Saudi Prince. The Playbook presents plays in increasing order of difficulty so that you can take baby steps on your way to baby-making steps™. This is done for safety. If you tried to run an advanced play like The Land Mine Whisperer without the proper experience, you could wind up seriously hurting your chances of getting laid. THE HISTORY OF THE PLAYBOOK

While the collection of plays presented here hails from the incomparable mind of Barney Stinson, it is by no means a new endeavor. In fact, devising schemes to seduce women has been man’s primary occupation since before the dawn of history. The proof exists in prehistoric cave paintings.

Cavemen would return home from a hunt carrying one of their buddies, Urk, on their shoulders. They would describe through spirited reenactment what a “dangerous” kill it was and how Urk bravely climbed atop the saber-toothed tiger or mastodon or triceratops or whatever. To help sell the story, they drew pictures of the event on the wall using charcoal and ochre.

Thanks to his bros, Urk would score some major cave tail that night while the others played “rock rock rock” to decide who would be the next day’s hero (Urk became ineligible for a week). On the next hunt the men would quickly kill an animal and then spend the rest of the day choreographing the big reenactment and arguing over which cave chicks would look the best clothed. Creating the myth of the all-day hunt served two purposes for cavemen: it got one guy some easy action and got the rest out of a full day of gathering and nagging.

While The Hero of the Hunt is as old as The I Discovered Fire, it’s actually not the oldest trick in the book. That would be The I Love You—which of course had an extra level of complexity before the invention of language.

Surprisingly, the next attempt to record plays didn’t occur until the thirteenth century, when monks spent their entire lives writing down seduction scenarios in collections called illuminated manuscripts. Tragically, they were all destroyed by a gaggle of angry nuns.

But, Barney, why would monks spend their entire lives scheming up ways to sleep with women when they had taken a vow of celibacy?

Funny Book for Barney Fans

This is an amusing read. As a big fan of 'How I Met Your Mother', and more specifically a big fan of Barney, this book did not let me down! It's the kind of book you can just pick up and read any page at random; you don't have to start at the beginning and read page by page, cover to cover.

Now of course I don't recommend you actually TRY these "plays" in real life, lol, unless you enjoy getting slapped/arrested, but if you're a fan, you will enjoy this funny collection of Barney-isms!

Be Thou My Vision

The title says it all. The underlying premise of this book is that the vision of an organization is all-important. Everything else is commentary. Nanus begins by defining a vision as a realistic, creditable, attractive future and explaining how it works and why it is needed. He then moves to the development of that vision and finally concludes with the implementation of the vision. Prime Pet Foods is used as an example of the steps that can be taken in the process of developing and implementing such a vision.

Exactly what I needed

Tom Carpenter's "Microsoft Windows Server Administration Essentials" is an excellent book for anyone without a lot of direct Win server experience. It has many screenshots of what you should be seeing and what to look for when working with the server, and its written with the novice in mind, covering many details that other books assume you already know. I am very glad to have found this book.
