Excellent edition of a great play

Had there been no Shakespeare, John Ford's play "'Tis Pity She's a Whore" would never have been written--but Shakespeare's tremendous example not only provided part of context of this play, but also obscures it. "'Tis Pity" is not as good as Shakespeare's very best works (the great tragedies and romances). Ford struggles to match Shakespeare's second-best works (e.g., the great comedies such as "As You Like It").

But judging Ford in comparison with Shakespeare is unfair. Perhaps a few score of writers really match Shakespeare: Homer, Sappho, Ovid, Virgil, perhaps Dante. I wouldn't give Shakespeare a five-star rating and give, say, Pope, Keats, or Austen a four-star rating. Nor would I give Ford a three-star rating next to Shakespeare's five-star and Keats' and Austen's four-star ratings.

In the bell curve of literature, Shakespeare and Homer (in my opinion) occupy the vanishingly small right side of the curve. Very few writers match Ford's achievement in "'Tis Pity." The play is powerful, cleanly plotted, and brilliantly written. In particular, Ford does a great job in creating sympathy for all of his major characters, and in particular for the incestuous lovers at the heart of the play. The play suffers only by comparison with Shakespeare and perhaps a handful of other great dramatists.

More important, the New Mermaids edition is very useful. The introduction is thoughtful and thorough; the page layout is clear (especially important with drama); and the footnotes are generally useful. The editor, Wiggins, sometimes elucidates matters that are perfectly clear--but I would rather the editor take that approach than leave me in the dark.

In short, serious students of literature will want to read this play, and the New Mermaids edition provides a well-annotated text using modern English spelling.

About the Author
Richard J. Lazarus is professor of law at the Georgetown University Law Center and director of the Georgetown University Supreme Court Institute. He litigated the first Superfund liability case on behalf of the federal government in the early 1980s and has since been involved in many of the significant environmental law cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

The most detailed and nuanced, factual history of U.S. environmental laws - a limitation is lack of international perspective.

Lazarus places environmental laws in broader context, drawing on history and an extraordinary variety of cultural, scientific, and political details to make candid generalizations. This is unusual in a time of fragmentation and compartmentalization of U.S. academic research disciplines, as well as society, beginning in the 1960s.

Thus, for example, many textbooks on environmental policy and history and most environmental organizations tend to focus on the Scottish immigrant advocate of environmental preservation, John Muir, and Theodore Roosevelt as U.S. environmental pioneers. In contrast, Lazarus points out George Perkins Marsh's 1864 book, "Man and Nature" as the groundbreaking study of the interaction of human society with ecology. Among other things,Lazarus notes the significance of public health awareness and advances around 1900, early "municipal efforts to control pollution", the municipal zoning movement, and the enactment by Congress of the Food and Drug Act, and Meat Inspection Act in 1906.

Lazarus' unquenchable curiosity nourishes his ability, found in a minority of scholars, to use concrete detail in ways that clarify the big picture, rather than letting it confuse or obfuscate. An example is citation of the effects of DDT to control malaria by public health workers in Borneo in the 1960s.The well-intentioned efforts of public health workers caused decimation of the lizard population when they ate DDT-contaminated food. This in turn decreased the local cat population that had been dependent on lizards for much of their diet. Reduction of the cat population led to an explosion of caterpillars that destroyed the thatched roofs, and rats that spread disease within the village. In short, the story illustrates the complexity and sensitivity of ecological relationships.

The author also offers probing and significant detail on political interactions relating to environmental policy. He cites President Nixon's order to his staff to "get his administration out front on the environment" in 1969 and 1970, and the Nixon Administration's early initiatives. He also notes that in time Nixon cooled on environmental action, "becoming convinced that environmentalists were running amok".

Lazarus points out in his introduction that the 1970s environmental laws were "enormously radical" , and that in spite of intense and continuing reform efforts, these laws continue to dominate the U.S. environmental management system. He is mindful of some of the problems with current environmental law, including its patchwork nature and objections by business and other groups. However, he embraces the necessity of centralized command & control law and decries the paralysis in extension of lawmaking. Based on my own historical research (that gained valuable material from Lazarus's book) and comparisons with EU policy*, I believe the book overlooks important issues that have come into ever sharper focus since the publication of Lazarus's work.

Most important is the fact that the U.S. system remains dominated by an outdated system of labyrinthine laws enacted in response to an atmosphere of crisis more than 35 years ago. They were based on assumptions that the greatest threat to the environment came from industry, and that economic forces would overrun federal regulators if not checked. The response not only created an adversarial, rigid framework of law and regulation selectively applicable to manufacturing,other industry, and activities involving land use. The key laws gave exclusive legal standing to environmental protection (excluding economic or other values), empowered citizen enforcement, and transferred leadership roles in environmental management from professional agencies to Congress and civil courts. This politicized system is unique among advanced nations. It not only created a rift in U.S. society, but fostered subsequent hemmhoraging of U.S. manufacturing and industry, decay of infrastructure (which inevitably involves land use), and hamstrung attempts at innovation in environmental management (except in the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments). Regulatory problems are now increasingly recognized as barriers to renewable energy development.

Here, Richard J. Lazarus has delivered a very unique look at the history of environmental law from an evolutionary or holistic perspective. This book will be a valuable resource for anyone looking for an in-depth look at environmental law as a field, but without the need for tedious policy descriptions or scientific minutiae. Lazarus covers the social and political history of environmental thought and how those phenomena shaped American environmental law as we know it. Lazarus also offers rewarding coverage of the challenges faced by concerned lawmakers in a legal system that resists long-term regulatory schemes, redistributions of costs and benefits, and scientific uncertainty. He also shows how environmental law needs to remain both heavily detailed and flexibly dynamic as the natural world and knowledge about it change over time.

This holistic approach to the law is fascinating and highly insightful, but just watch out for Part III in which Lazarus adds too much unnecessary supporting material on technical specifications (Chapter 8); and derails his unique legal history with unenlightening condemnations of American consumerism and high-speed lifestyles, complete with fairly bizarre complaints about sped-up baseball games, pre-faded jeans, and internet dating services. The tail end of the book is also stretched out with many repeated points and brief introductions of post-modern concepts like "convergence" that Lazarus fails to completely explore. But overall, despite the problematic third part of the book, Lazarus has delivered a unique summary and insightful overview of a complex topic that will be of use to both concerned citizens and researchers in a variety of disciplines. Fun Fast Paced Mystery

This is the third book in the Annie McCauley series. I've read the first 2, but have found each to easily stand alone. It's nice to read them all as there's tidbits thrown in here and there along the way to link the journey, but nothing integral to the plots. This book had no editing problems. The characters are easy to like. The plot is fun, fast paced and comedic from start to finish. The first 2 books take place in NYC, but the bulk of this one takes them to Bangor, Maine. I liked the change of scenery. This is a humorous relaxing mystery. I'm getting ready to read the 4th book now. I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really like the characters of Annie and Luther

I really like the characters of Annie and Luther. The author, Willee Amsden, makes them true to life and funny, but also serious when they need to be. We found out more about Luther in this book which explains some of why he is the way he is. I have followed them through a couple of books and eagerly await reading another in the series. The ongoing feud between Annie and Brittany is full of comical moments as well as serious ones. I also really like Annie's BFF Luis. He also is funny yet serious. I wouldn't mind meeting any of these characters in real life.

Apr�s tout, j’ai souvent lu des romans apr�s avoir vu les longs m�trages et j’ai presque toujours eu d’agr�ables surprises : Blow de Bruce Porter, The Beach de Alex Garland, Club Dumas de Arturo P�rez-Reverte, pour ne nommer que ceux-l�.

L’id�e tourne autour d’un vieux livre centenaire qui a �t� offert � Rhonda par sa fille Hayley. Dans ce dernier, elle a fait la d�couverte d’un � Grand Secret – Le Secret de la vie �, un secret qui a �t� aussi connu par les plus grands de ce monde : Platon, William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Victor Hugo, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Abraham Lincoln, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, etc.

Great Cookbook, Wonderful Food!

I'll start my review by stating I've read all of the 1- and 2-star reviews here on Amazon.com before I prepared most of the recipes and I'll try and address many of the concerns noted there.

I am graduate student who loves to cook but who is often busy (or, at least, should be busy) studying and a slow cooker was a Christmas gift for me to allow me more time to study yet still prepare delicious, home cooked meals.

In my search for "healthy" slow cooker cookbooks, I ran across this book and ordered it instantly as I love Asian cuisine. I'll admit, I lean more towards sushi, Thai, and Chinese than I do Indian (so, I'm no expert) but I've liked every Indian dish I've had previously in restaurants.

Before writing a review, I decided to try a swatch of recipes from the book. Here they are (for what it's worth, in order that I made them):

Traditional Chicken Curry, page 108
Rice Pudding, page 127
Punjabi Curried Kidney Beans, page 74
Spiced Cauliflower and Potatoes, page 91
Black Lentils, page 51

Many of the negative reviews stated the dishes were:

- "too spicy" -- I didn't find this to be the case, at all. I went with the low end on the chilies (i.e. many recipes state 4-6 serrano peppers, I'd go with 4), often seeding/stemming at least one of them to cut down on the heat. If you don't like foods too spicy, but still want the flavor, I'd recommend using fewer peppers, or seeding/stemming them before adding them to the dish.

- "too salty" -- the author *clearly* states upfront that she uses kosher/sea salt in all recipes. If you use table salt, she recommends cutting the amount by half. As someone who never uses much salt in the preparation of his food, I've yet to find any dish "too salty"

- "undercooked meat/veggies" -- I own a 6-quart crock pot, which is larger than the 5-quart crock pot the author uses in all recipes. As such, my cooking times had to be longer (though, not by much. maybe 30 minutes), as it takes longer for the heating unit and stoneware to get up to temperature. Nevertheless, I have *never* had an undercooked dish by simply following directions and adding a smidge more time. Again, the author clearly states in her introduction (as do *all* slow cooker cookbooks I've run across) that different units heat differently, and cooking times need to be adjusted accordingly.

- "not authentic" -- this is one issue I cannot address, as I am not Indian nor did I grow up eating "authentic" Indian cuisine. However, each dish I have tried is tasty (as I'll elaborate on below).

- "too many beans/lentils/non-meat recipes" -- while I bought this book on a whim, if you are purchasing books through Amazon.com, many of them allow you to view the Table of Contents before purchasing the book. I recommend doing that, should you be worried too many recipes won't suit your fancy.

- "all the spices are the same in each recipe" -- I'll admit, this had me highly skeptical, as well. With almost every recipe using the same spices (turmeric, red chilie powder, garam masala, cinnamon, ginger, serranos, cumin, coriander), I really thought the dishes would taste waaay too similar and I'd get sick of each recipe. Boy was I ever wrong! Each dish, while similar, has it's own unique, distinct flavor that is just wonderful! On top of that, as as graduate student, it's budget friendly, as I only need a few spices in the pantry to make a wide variety of dishes!

Now, on to my food reviews:

Traditional Chicken Curry: as this was the first dish I tried, I had high hopes (especially considering my apartment smelled fantastic for hours!). It came out very delicious and was easy to make. And much to my surprise, it tasted even better the next day!

Rice Pudding: my least favorite of the five dishes I've tried so far. I made it twice, as I messed it up the first time, and I did like it better the second time. Honestly, I think I'm just not a huge cardamom fan and it was "too much" the first time. The second time, I used ground cardamom, instead of seeds, hoping to tone down that particular flavor. It worked, and I enjoy it much more now.

Punjabi Curried Kidney Beans: let me state upfront I am not a vegetarian and almost every meal I typically make contains meat. Boy was I surprised how much I loved this...even more than the chicken curry! While I'm not a vegetarian, this cookbook may yet turn me into one! I was amazed how the spices and flavors created a wonderful dish that didn't even make me miss meat!

Spiced Cauliflower and Potatoes: again, upfront, I hate cauliflower. Seriously! But, I was so pleased with the curried kidney beans, I decided to give this a whirl. Again, wonderful!

Black Lentils: I am eating this as I write, and having never had lentils before, it is again delicious and I don't even miss meat. Truly a compliment!

I've already gone to the grocery store to stock up ingredients for the next few dishes I want to try...I've been eating nothing but Indian food since this book arrived and I can't say I'm sick of it! I also love that she gives the history of each dish, along with personal anecdotes about each. For me, it really helped bring the book/food alive.

While everyone has a different palate, and different tastes, I can honestly say I have enjoyed every dish I have made. If you love flavorful, simple foods to make, I suggest you try this book.

Really Tried To Like This, But Just Couldn't...

I love Indian food, and I go out for Indian food often, at least a few times a month. If you are trying to re-create dishes you have eaten in Indian restaurants, this book is not going to help you achieve that. It is clear that the author is trying to make things as convenient as possible while sacrificing a lot of flavor development in the process. Many of the recipes simply ask you to dump everything in the slow cooker and cook it for 14 hours (!). How many of the most delicious things you have eaten in your life have been cooked in this manner? Probably very few if any. There are too many nuances in the preparation and ingredients in Indian cooking to treat dishes this way. I made 5 or 6 recipes from this book and they were all terrible. I could see after tasting them what I could/would have done differently to change them for the better, but that isn't why you purchase a cook book. I sold my copy back on Amazon.

A transformative cookbook? YES.

I would not generally use the word "tranformative" for a cookbook--it's really more of a descriptor for philosophical, religious, or self-help books. But...I've been making recipes from this book for almost two years now; it is not an understatement to say that my food shopping, preparation, cleanup, storage, and eating habits have all transformed. Everything is simpler. The spices are mostly consistent (ease of shopping), the preparation is chopping and throwing into the pot (easy! especially with the help of my 2 cup and 8 cup food processors); the cleanup a breeze! and ohhhhh the goody goodness of the flavors.

There are currently about 8 recipes that are my "go to" recipes-- I make one big pot of something every week, for 2 people-- we have leftovers once or twice that week. I try a new recipe every 2-3 months. I am health-conscious, and love that I can make this wholesome food quickly and easily--I feel good about eating what I make at home, and there are now often times I will go to an Indian restaurant, and think, "Mine is better!" (eg: Saag, Sambar, and Rajmah). Never before did I think I would be able to say that about Indian Food.

This was the book that gave me confidence in cooking Indian food--I had been wanting to/trying for at least 5 years before I bought this book--most Indian recipe books feel complicated-- so many steps! so many spices! exactly when do I know the mustard seeds and curry leaves are "done"!?? Maybe it's a cultural disconnect, but if so (for me), Ms. Singla's book has overcome that. I am truly grateful for this book, thank you, Ms. Singla.

Loved it!

Wow! This was an absolutely epic conclusion to the Flight series. I stayed up really late reading this and got up early to finish it because it is so well written and the story keeps you on edge. If doesn't matter if your involved in aviation or not. This book is for you. The three part series will give you insight into the industry while shocking you with an incredible story. Who wouldn't like to fly in safer skies

"Flight for Survival".... what an outstanding way to complete a trilogy! Impossible to put down, this book keeps you glued to your seat and as you turn its pages over and over the plot gets more and more gripping.
Ms Karlene Petitt's engrossing trilogy has come to an end. But has it? The trilogy may have, but the problems aviation faces today have not. Who wouldn't like to fly in safer skies? Join Karlene's fight to make this happen.

Sherlock Holmes transported into the aviation era with a Dickensian twist.

Karlene has once again done a great job of combining aviation fact and mystery fiction into a thought provoking novel about the future of aviation. Reading the complete “trilogy” gives the reader a significant insight into the aviation industry. Automation is creating important effects on all forms of transportation and Karlene’s trilogy identifies these effects in a manner understandable to all readers. Worthwhile read for everyone. "Flight for Control" and "Flight for Safety" should be read first for best understanding of the characters and plot.
