Nice (Nostalgic) Applique Book

This book is a little archaic but I like it anyway. I'm quite a fan of Charlotte Patera and own a couple of other books she's written. Hand applique techniques haven't changed all that much over time and the techniques she has presented in this book are still valid. Some people might be disappointed in the projects and illustrations which definitely 'read' as 70's (I happen to find them nostalgic), and book lacks the contemporary 'gloss' of more current books. Nonetheless, I'm glad I bought it and as I'm a designer myself, I wouldn't want to remake the project designs in the book in the first place, I would prefer to create my own designs with the book mainly serving as inspiration to pursue my own ideas.

About the Author
Cliff Hastings has been at Wolfram Research since 1997. After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor s degree in mathematics from Monmouth College, he joined Wolfram as an evangelist aboard the MathMobile, traveling the country training people to use Mathematica. As the author of the original Hands-on Start to Mathematica video series, his passion has always been helping people get started with Mathematica.

Kelvin Mischo is a Certified Mathematica Trainer and works at Wolfram Research overseeing strategic relationships with academic organizations in North America. After learning Mathematica as a student at the University of Illinois, Kelvin joined Wolfram in 1998 to work with high schools on the integration of Mathematica into their courses. Kelvin has given hundreds of technical seminars and trainings on Mathematica to high schools, two-year colleges, and universities.

Michael Morrison joined Wolfram Research in 2005 after completing a bachelor s degree in computer science and mathematics from Illinois Wesleyan University and a master s degree in mathematics from Illinois State University. While at Wolfram, Michael held a variety of positions, ranging from the technical education of internal staff to using Mathematica for data analysis and reporting initiatives. Michael is currently employed at Illinois Wesleyan University, where he oversees research and analytics for the Advancement Office.

Worst of all---and this is just inexcusable---there is no index

There's little material that isn't already online at Wolfram. The book promises an answer key to the exercises if you send in the "unique code" in the book, and there is no explanation of what that code is or where to find it, and an email to the authors has gone unanswered.

There is a hint that they may provide this in electronic form, which would at least be searchable, but at this point, I can't recommend this book.

Update: The authors did reply with an answer key for the exercises, and an electronic version of the book may be out by "the end of the year", and I agree this is a useful introduction to Mathematica and one of the few (only?) such for recent Mathematica versions. But still, no index?

Wolfram's Hand-On Start to Wolfram Mathematica is a much needed introduction to Mathematica 10. It's been a good long time since Wolfram published a manual to its computational masterpiece so this certainly helps a lot. This is a workbook that hobbyists and professionals can learn the basics of Mathematica. Mathematica is a huge program with nearly 5,000 functions. The last time Wolfram produced a hard copy manual was Mathematica Book, Fifth Edition. With 1464 pages it went over all the functions of the for the Mathematica 5.0 and came out in 2003. It was truly an math encyclopedia. It was also quite well written and an excellent textbook. In the intervening twelve years the number of functions has more than doubled. So a manual like the Mathematica Book would be a true encyclopedia with over five thousand pages. So, the manual is now part of the extensive help menu along with a library of pdf books. Some of us would still prefer a paper edition. This fills that need.

The text is divided into two parts, the first part goes over the basics of mathematica. How to use the program. The Wolfram language conventions. How to use the word processor function, graphs, and how to create demostrations. The second part is a closer examination of various concepts in depth. Such as algebraic manipulation, calculus, export and import of data. Since Mathematica keeps everything and only makes additions to the big program, users of older editions of Mathematica can still find a lot of good information. The text is clear with wide margins, the authors used color effectively, and pointed the Mathematica user to resources contained online and in the program itself. This is a must have book for any Mathematica user. I recommend it highly.

Great book to begin learning Mathematica

After going through the first hundred pages, I felt obliged to write a review to advise anyone new to Mathematica to buy this book. I have been through several other books which have been useful, but this book covers many critically important topics that are not covered elsewhere. Other books focus on using the Mathematica language for input and leaves you trying to memorize commands and how they are used. But by using free form input, autocompletion, command templates, suggestion bars, learning how to work with units, etc, you will accelerate your ability to solve problems. In addition I've not seen word processing and typesetting explained elsewhere. I've only glanced through the rest of the book, but it equally informative.

Adventures into Mindless Self Indulgence

Jimmy Urine always said that he preferred comic books to music, so it makes sense that the band would be incarnated in comic form at some point. Besides, the move only seems natural for a music act with such gravity-defying cartoon character-like energy - and it's true, Mindless Self Indulgence translate perfectly to the page.

For those who got here from being an MSI fan, and who aren't familiar with comics, be warned that being a one-shot, this comic is very, very short (since the first printing is sold out already, the high prices might be deceiving!). The front cover, though brilliant, is also misleading - there never is any magic or dragon-slaying, since the content, the band promises, is 100% true and factual (believe me when I say you have to remember that later - the stories get crazyyy).

As a piece of band merchandise, 'Adventures...' is fantastic - you couldn't ask for better. It's immensely entertaining, pretty, and also has a couple of fun things to do at the back, including a colouring page. As a comic, though, it's a modest effort, feeling more like a brief excursion to a different medium than a committed project. The stories are so short they're momentary, and there isn't a continuous narrative strand linking the individual stories together - even when more can been made of them, stories are glanced over quickly due to space restraints. As a result the comic feels a little superficial.

The art and character design is good overall. I admit I had issues with Jess Fink's art on the first read-through - her style is very loose, to the point where there were some panels where I winced, because there was something off about it. Those panels are still there, but the art's grown on me overall - Kitty, Lyn-Z and the others all look great. Whatever the odd flaw, the art has that essential comics energy and zest, and Jess's occasional stylistic half-assedness with it suits Mindless Self Indulgence very, very well.

So to summarize, 'Adventures into Mindless Self Indulgence' nowhere near stands alone as a comic, but its intense fun means it is a must-have for any Mindless fan. The only thing possibly wrong with it is its length - it's far too short!

Do Your Research

I am relatively new to the band, and I love comic books. When I found out the members of MSI wrote a comic book, I got super excited and ordered it. I have never been to a show, and only heard one song and one album. I got the comic, and was surprised. Clearly, I should have done more research because the content inside was that which I don't usually look for. Some stories, such as the Kitty and the Lyn-Z stories, were very funny and enjoyable. The others were not as enjoyable.

If you are considering this comic but don't know what to look forward to, this is a generalized summary:

A lot of strong language
Nudity (male lower half)
Sexual references (dialogue and visual)

It is basically a mix of stories by the band, so don't expect a straightforward plot. There is some crazy stuff in there, and they swear it is all true. You have been warned. :) If you don't know the band or find the above content not in your ball field, I wouldn't recommend this comic to you. However, MSI fans will definitely enjoy.

Best band ever, funniest comic book ever. It has multiple stories from each band member's perspective about their time on tour and at other events. My favorite is Kitty's story of getting food-jacked, hilarious!! Love these guys.

When I read a story about a relationship - and it doesn't matter if it's a M/F romance, M/M romance, a parent/child, siblings, best friends tale - I have to like the characters. Even if they aren't likeable. They have to be believable and realistic, fleshed out, three dimensional. And if I am supposed to like these characters at some time, I want to eventually really like them.

This did not happen in Inseparable. No, instead of liking the characters, I totally loved them. Adam and Joe were just two good people who are supposed to wind up with each other (oh, I'm not spoiling anything - look at the cover, look at the blurb - unless you live in ancient Crete, you know exactly how this kind of story will end). I loved the plot, I loved the "hook", and I loved all of the secondaries. I'd enjoy reading a story about Joe's sister.

I will echo what I've read in other reviews - I wish the book had been longer (eg. I would have liked some back story about Adam's father). It was over too quickly and now I'm back to reading about vampires with angst (but they don't sparkle).

Chris Scully has written one of the sweetest Xmas stories I've read. Normally I don't care for short writes but she's managed to write a complete story, flesh out the characters, have a great plot and provide a happy ending without rushing anything. My only problem is that I wanted to keep reading it because it was so very good.

Very classical seasonal romance with a bromance subtheme. Adam awakes in an hospital bed with a caring boyfriend by his side, Joe. He is in pain, but the soothing presence of Joe is helping a lot, and Adam thinks how lucky he is to have such an handsome and caring man by his side. The problem is Adam doesn't remember Joe and he doesn't remember anything else of his past life. Doctors are confident the memory will be back and Adam doesn't worry too much. But as soon as Joe brings him home, their home, Adam finds out he is not Joe's boyfriend, but his best friend since forever. They are not together and moreover Adam is straight, and with a girlfriend, while Joe is gay and single. But why Adam feels like he is in love with Joe, and why Joe is protective of Adam to a level that it seems almost jealousy?

The story is simple, sweet and cute. No much drama, just an happy and welcoming family and two "stupid" guys who need just to sit down and talk to each other. From this point of view, it was right, Adam and Joe, even if pushing thirty, are basically still boys who have barely left the safe shelter of their home (and with home I mean Joe's family who "adopted" Adam when he was still a teenager; it's not a legal adoption, but Adam, being Joe's best friend, was more at Joe's home than his own). When they started to move from the young adult to the adult world, and the instinct of having a relationship and building an home started to make their appearance, both Joe than Adam feared ruining their bromance if they gave a try to moving it to something different. But now it's time to let those fears go away, now it's time to spread the wings and fly.

All the same, this is salutary reading as a means of culling believers' weaker arguments: that faith offers comfort (false comfort is none at all), or has provided a historical hedge against fascism (it mostly hasn't), or that "Eastern" religions are better (nope). The book's real strength is Hitchens's on-the-ground glimpses of religion's worst face in various war zones and isolated despotic regimes. Not only does religion poison everything, which he argues by explaining several ways in which religion is immoral, but the world would be better off without religion. Replace religious faith with inquiry, open-mindedness, and the pursuit of ideas, he exhorts. Closely reading major religious texts, Hitchens points to numerous examples of atrocities and mayhem in them. Religious faith, he asserts, is both result and cause of dangerous sexual repression. What's more, it is grounded in nothing more than wish fulfillment. Hence, he believes that religion is man-made, and an ethical life can be lived without its stamp of approval. With such chapter titles as "Religion Kills" and "Is Religion Child Abuse?" Hitchens intends to provoke, but he is not mean-spirited and humorless. Indeed, he is effortlessly witty and entertaining as well as utterly rational. It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus

As important to human consciousness as Copernicus-- and far more critical to furthering world peace than Moses, Jesus, or Muhammad. I have dared the "faith-full" to read it through. They skim, they reguse, abd they distort and misremember. It is a shocking book-- like learning that your pappa was Santa Claus, but a thousand tomesmore difficult to accept. Truly a watershed in our evolution of thoughtfulness and an accurate awareness of the Mystery and the Truth!!!

Free thinking, science, art, literature and critical systematic study on all subjects are Great

It's never enough to tell over and over again how much one needs to go through the free thinking tradition that questions the power and authority of religion in the world. It's again so urgent to engage in the atheist's reasoning. To stop beeing afraid because the history of the exercise of religion, namely the western monotheist religions, has been one of fear and punishment and obscurantism and superstition and torture and war and ignorance.

It's all been said about the eloquence and wit and knowledge and courage of Hitchens. Subscribe to it all.

We need brave men and women to come forth and break the fear of offending this dark ages' proponents of an evil, dogmatic, violent and absolutist global society where science and art and literature and free thinking and debating and scrutiny and study and curiosity and fun and openness and tolerance have no place.

It's urgent to keep the fight against the final fight, the final war, the final word, the final truth, intending to put an end to the only way humans are supposed to live: the tentative and unfinished and interrogative and curious and sternly studious life. Striving enlightenment and beauty and knowledge and awe is our path in the world and this path can only be walked on by repudiating absolutist violent claims based on absolutist violent books that belong in History and in the past.

'Holy' Hitchens!

This is a masterpiece. Along with "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris, this excellent work by the late Christopher Hitchens is one leg of the 'milking stool' of my atheism. It is provocative, insightful, and beautifully written in fluid and articulate prose. Even if you're a believer, I encourage you to read this book. It's not purely a polemic against religion; rather, it raises questions that every theist should consider and be able to answer.

The most detailed Haynes space manual yet

Although the overall quality of Haynes' new releases seems to be down somewhat this year, this book really impressed me. It's certainly their most in-depth space "manual" yet, even more so than their books on the Lunar Rover and the Apollo 13 mission. Although Dr. Baker wrote extensively about the hardware and engineering of Project Mercury in his 1981 tome "The History of Manned Spaceflight," this is the most detailed book I've ever seen on the spacecraft, official NASA publications excepted.

At 204 pages, this is one of those rare Haynes books that has breathing room. The opening chapter goes into some depth about the origin of Project Mercury, and the evolution of blunt-body entry vehicles. The majority of the book is a detailed technical description of the spacecraft hardware and how it worked. Each of the major spacecraft systems receives a few pages of technical description, accompanied by excellent photographs and diagrams. Even the biomedical sensors and posigrade rockets are described in some depth. There's quite a bit of material here I've never seen before, including detailed explanations of how the horizon sensors and periscope worked, and the instrumentation systems of the unmanned capsules. Finally, there's a brief overview of each mission, which discusses the main technical issues encountered, and how the spacecraft evolved during the program, descriptions of the Little Joe, Redstone, and Atlas launch vehicles, and a look at the Worldwide Tracking Network (WWTN).

The most impressive aspect of this book are the technical drawings, of which there are nearly 150. These range from exploded views and cross-sections, to "breadboard" type diagrams, system block diagrams, wiring charts, and even a few telemetry graphs. You'll find exploded views of cabin air valves, cross-sections of the spacecraft structure, cutaway views of the launch escape tower, and so on. There's even quite a few "workshop manual" type diagrams, with hand-written notes on installation procedures and how many ft-lbs of torque to use when tightening the bolts. There's also numerous diagrams depicting the competing proposals presented in 1959, and a few diagrams showing some interesting ideas put forth at the end of the program, including an orbiting observatory and a micrometeorite collection experiment.

If this book has a flaw, it's that it's not as compulsively readable as some of Haynes' other space "manuals," the recent one on the Saturn V being an obvious example. It's an engineering book written by an engineer, and meant for serious space buffs only. I read it in a few days, but I imagine most folks could only handle it in small doses. A great book for space enthusiasts.

Excellent reference book for the Mercury program. Covers the early concepts and ideas that finally culminated in getting our astronauts into space. Great info on the design, structure and systems of this system.
A must have book for space enthusiasts.
