About the Author
Joseph A. DeVito received his BA from Hunter College in 1960, his MA from Temple University in 1962 and his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1964. After receiving his PhD, he taught at Hunter College-in-the-Bronx (later Lehman College). He has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, though he has concentrated on the undergraduate level and mainly on the introductory courses. He has served on the editorial boards of Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication, and Etc: A Review of General Semantics.

I bought this for class and it gives a lot of insight to communication. The wording is simple and easygoing to read. You aren't overwhelmed with details, but there's enough there for you to understand the subject. Great book.

One of the worst things I've ever bought from Amazon

One of the worst things I've ever bought from Amazon. Not commenting about the book or the matter but the online electronic kindle version of the book that I rented from amazon. It is basically a bootleg photocopied version of the book with a non user friendly page flipping feature. The app is useless. Freezes frequently. Flipping through pages is terrible. You can never understand where you are. The search feature and the go to page features are terrible. Scrolling using the slider at the bottom of the screen is useless. Extremely difficult to cross reference any topic or subject matter. You can highlight but what's the use if the app and book keeps on freezing and just misguides you. Please donot use the electronic version. Just order in advance pay a few extra dollars and get the actual book. Your grades will thank you for that.

I found the concepts in this book to be well laid out. I was concerned that I would not be able to understand the content, as I read some scary reviews for the book when I ordered it, but it was a required book to purchase for my communications course. I was pleasantly surprised. The terms were described well, although you would sometimes have to read an entire section in order to understand the "whole picture" but who can really be upset about that? We are supposed to do a little bit of reading.

The images were also helpful in a number of cases.

About the Author
Gail Simon:

I came to systemic practice through social work in the early 1980s when I trained in family therapy using structural, strategic and early Milan approaches. I undertook further training at the Kensington Consultation Centre (KCC) in London in the early 1990s. In 1990, I co-founded The Pink Practice as a response to oppressive psychotherapeutic practices against the lesbian, gay and queer communities. Lots of people think research is dull until they find out how many forms of inquiry there are which echo the values and activities of their own practice. My doctoral research was on “Writing (as) Systemic Practice” in which I experimented with dialogical writing styles to reflect my conversational and ethical practice in therapy, supervision and education. I lead the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and enjoy researching the extraordinariness that is involved in human systems and writing and editing for professional journals and for the new systemic practice publishing tent, Everything is Connected Press.

Alex Chard:

In the early part of my career I worked within the voluntary and statutory sectors with young people in trouble. I then began to work independently. I work as a systemic organisational consultant, a role which includes inquiry into organisational functioning, culture and practice. Over 23 , my consultancy practice has included public sector contexts including work within children’s social care, education, youth work, criminal justice and within the voluntary sector. My experience of assisting organisations manage change has included working with statutory boards, with management teams helping them to improve their services and on occasion managing services or critical projects. My current organisational inquiry and research contexts include conducting inter-agency case reviews where significant harm has been caused and in that context developing reflexive approaches to creating pan-organisational learning. My MSc. dissertation was a systemic inquiry into the impact of government inspection on the management of a service. My doctoral thesis The Art of Organisational Development was on creating systemic change and development in public sector management. I am also a visiting senior lecturer to the Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire and have developed a systemic module for a Social Work Masters Programme.

A return to the basics of the conducting art

The ability of going beyond patterns and conducting technique is what matters the most for a conductor. Though books dedicated to conducting techniques are mandatory for studying the discipline, a conductor definitely needs to be concerned with the close relationship between choral sound and physical gesture. The most difficult duty for conductors is the ability to express themselves through gestures and other human elements to their best, in such a way that the singers be able to react spontaneously and honestly. For that, it is imperative for both the conductor and the singers that they master the technique of being, reacting, conducting, and singing in a natural way. As a consequence, the physical approach is defining. The way a conductor feels, breathes, reacts, and knows a choral work is reflected in his or her gestures and face. From there, these aspects will be reflected in the way singers respond to a conductor's gestures and suggestions. The closeness of the conductor - choir mental and psychological relationship must be so intense that it has the ability to anticipate any unsuitable performing 'slips.'
To write his remarkable book about conducting choral sound, Jordan masterfully combined research with his background inherited from his gifted teachers, as well as with the experience he gained while working with students at Westminster and Chapel Choirs he conducted.
Evoking Sound is structured in three parts: 'Building a Relationship of Gesture to Sound,' 'Literature for Study and Self-Evaluation,' and 'A Primer for Rehearsal Technique.' Ground Breaking

This book is NOT a re-ordering of previously published information found in the myriad of conducting texts available. Quite the contrary, Jordan addresses some of the most important issues that face the conductor but are rarely, if ever, discussed, but tend to have the most dramatic impact on their success. As a conductor and teacher of conducting for over 15 years, I will adopt this text as the core material for my future conducting classes. Jordan has been able to put into words the very things that I have been trying to teach, offering concrete excercises along with the philosophical discussion. This book will make the learning process so much easier and systematic for my students. Way to go James Jordan! I get it!

A complete waste of time!

The author talks in circles and never says much that is useful. Most of the material that IS useful is stolen from other writers. You are better off reading one of the standard conducting texts. This book is a waste of your time.

About the Author
Mary K. Campbell was Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, where she taught biochemistry, general chemistry, and physical chemistry, as well as advised undergraduates working on biochemical research projects. Her avid interest in writing led to the publication of many highly successful editions of this textbook. Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Campbell received her Ph.D. from Indiana University and completed postdoctoral work in biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University. Her areas of interest included researching the physical chemistry of biomolecules, specifically, spectroscopic studies of protein-nucleic acid interactions. She was also coauthor with Shawn Farrell on BIOCHEMISTRY, 8th Edition (Cengage Learning), as well as several editions of GENERAL, ORGANIC, AND BIOCHEMISTRY by Bettelheim, Brown, Campbell, Farrell, and Torres.

Owen M. McDougal is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Boise State University. A native of upstate New York, his love of the outdoors inspired him to travel west for graduate school and pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Utah in the laboratory of C. Dale Poulter. His work to elucidate the three-dimensional structures of neuropeptides by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy involved the application of physical chemistry to address problems in biological systems. Upon completion of his Ph.D., Dr. McDougal sought an academic environment that allowed him to share his passion for science with students. He taught general, organic, and biological chemistry at Southern Oregon University which allowed him to hone his instructional skills. Looking to advance his love for writing, Owen shifted to a faculty position in the research-intensive environment at Boise State University, where he investigates the bioactivity of marine and terrestrial natural products, including studies of food chemistry, nutraceutical products, and specialty chemicals.

About the Author
Linda M. Zane: Linda M. Zane, EdD, is associate professor of early childhood education at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Prior to this position, she was assistant professor at Slippery Rock University and adjunct professor of early childhood education at Duquesne University. Dr. Zane was the director of an accredited early childhood program for ten years before venturing into the world of higher education. She holds an EdD in instructional leadership from Duquesne University.
