However, page by page the author won me over with his detailed and descriptive writing style, well-developed lore and universe, and complex characters.

About the Author

Whitney Bauman is Assistant Professor of Religion and Science at Florida International University. He is the author of Theology, Creation, and Environmental Ethics (Routledge, 2009) and Assistant Editor for the Encyclopedia of Sustainability: Spirituality (Berkshire, 2009).

Richard R. Bohannon II teaches in the Environmental Studies and Theology departments at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Religion and Society at Drew University. His publications include "Constructing Nature at a Chapel in the Woods" in Ecospirit: Religion and Philosophies for the Earth (Fordham, 2007).

Kevin J. O’Brien is Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics at Pacific Lutheran University. He is the author of An Ethics of Biodiversity: Christianity, Ecology, and the Variety of Life (Georgetown, 2010).

Start your soul-searching here

If you are concerned about the way we treat Nature (and each other, for that matter) and, like an increasing number of people, at least suspect that there is a lot of soul-searching that we need to do in order to start mending the mess we have done over centuries, this is a wonderful place to start. The authors manage to make a beautiful, easy to follow read out of some of the most disturbing issues we face today, which is a HUGE plus. I have been professionally involved in the sustainability field for over a decade and every day I grow more and more convinced that we will not outgrow our contradictions and dangerous Western progress and wellbeing paradigms unless we search deep within to stop this meaningless rat race which, even if it has made some -fewer everyday- more materially affluent, it has failed miserably to make us any happier and it threatens everything there is to be cherished and revered, let alone our very survival. The book provides lots of insightful questions, seeking not to indoctrinate but to awaken, which, in my opinion, is exactly what we need. Moreover, they provide great recommended readings at the end of each chapter.

Great introduction to the subject matter

I bought this book for a class on religion and ecology, and found it very interesting. This is a clear, well-rounded introduction to the field. And, in my opinion, this book is a more entertaining read than a lot of academic texts. While still scholarly, the tone is more direct than other theoretical, social science books I've read.

Robin Hood Lives!

Wow! What a find! This is great writing with a great translation full of adventure, courtly love, and chivalry. This is a well-writen story full of suspense, peopled with heroes and villains, and written by a genius. The text is primarily concerned with young Robin Hood's adventures between the ages of 15 and 20. The translation from the French is seamless.

About the Author
John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras.

excellent, but if you are new to Wallander Mysteries, read them in sequence...

Other reviewers said all that had to be said. I have one suggestion to readers that are new to Kurt Wallander Mystery Novels. Read them in sequence. Unfortunately, they were translated to English out of order. Here is the correct order: 1. Faceless Killers (1991 2. The Dogs of Riga (1992) 3. The White Lioness 1993 4. The Man Who Smiled 1994 5. Sidetracked 1995 6. The Fifth Woman 1996 7. One Step Behind (1997 8. Firewall (1998 9. Before the Frost (2002) and The Troubled Man (2009), the last case of Wallander. Also, consider another 'non-Wallander' mystery: The Return of the Dancing Master (2000) and The Man From Beijing (2010). I hope I didn't miss anything...

The writing is quite good, the character development is well above average

After seeing the Wallender mysteries on TV, this is the first book in the series that I read. The writing is quite good, the character development is well above average, and the plot, though quite engaging, seems, like a lot of other mystery novels, a bit far-fetched (though I'm aware that such things do actually happen).

I will probably read other novels in the series and, readers of this review should know, I seldom give five stars. So four stars is pretty good.

The reason I didn't give five stars is that unlike some mystery writers such as Dick Francis, Michael Connelly, CJ Box, Paul Doiron, and William Kent Krueger, where I really come to enjoy the "company" of the main characters and can't wait until I can spend more time with them in the next novel, after finishing this book I didn't feel like I was "missing" Wallender and anxious to "spend more time with him."

Still, a pretty good book.

A wonderful, subtle, minimal to no violence author, who meticulously gathers minute clues into a slowly clear picture

Great story; too bad there aren't enough more of his fine, subtle, realistic novels. Great series to get if you're looking for a new author; only the first one is a bit weak, and that's because I'd read #'s 4 and 6, by which he'd really honed his craft. Google a list that shows them in order, and try to go that way; there are subtle, infrequent mentions of aspects of cases from a prior book. Not significant; each stands very well on it's own. But, the detective, and his daughter, and his father are aging as the novels progress, and that's reflected in the narrative, and minimally in some of the plots.

Lobo, "Cuba's richest man and one of the world's greatest speculators," is an intriguing subject ("friends nicknamed him El Veneno, the poisonous one, for his charm and sibylline tongue"), and Rathbone handles his volte face, from hobnobbing with Bette Davis to the loss of his fortune and death in exile in Spain, with finesse. No critics disputed that John Paul Rathbone has written an excellent biography of Julio Lobo. Their enthusiasm varied somewhat, however, in relating Lobo's life to the larger story of Cuba. Reviewers interested in business and trade had no trouble understanding Lobo's importance, but many who would have otherwise not shown much interest in sugar were similarly impressed by Rathbone's use of the tycoon's life to show how Cuba has changed. A few critics, however, found the fit unsatisfying and some of Rathbone's personal digressions distracting (his mother was a Cuban exile of Lobo's social class). Overall, though, critics felt The Sugar King of Havana to be essential reading for those interested in business history or Latin America.

Like Tom Gjelten in Bacardi and the Fight for Cuba (2008), journalist Rathbone evokes pre-Castro Cuba through one of the country’s most successful enterprises, in this case, a sugar empire built by Julio Lobo (1898–1983). Beginning as a trader in his father’s firm, Lobo became, by the 1930s, a force in the global sugar market. Rathbone recounts Lobo’s speculative coups en route to direct ownership of cane fields and mills. A visitor to Lobo’s office, homes, and mills in Cuba, Rathbone contrasts the dilapidation of contemporary Cuba with the look of the prerevolutionary country that he recovers from both Lobo’s biography and that of his own Cuban-born mother, whose social life tangentially intersected with Lobo’s world. The present/past technique effectively dilutes the polarizing imperatives of pro- and anti-Castro presumptions and restores a realistic sense of what 1950s Cuba was like, including the guarded optimism with which many upper-crust Cubans such as Lobo initially viewed Castro’s seizing of power. Rathbone’s care with social atmosphere lifts his portrayal of Lobo above the usual life-of-a-tycoon and enriches the historical understanding of readers contemplating post-Castro Cuba. --Gilbert Taylor

I loved the narrative about Senor Lobo

I loved the narrative about Senor Lobo. My one criticism is that the aurhour's obsession with weaving his own Cuban family into the story severely detracts from it. In some spots entire chapters seem dedicated to his reminiscing and bragging about them. I thought I was buying a book about Julio Lobo, but the book is only about half that.

A must read for people interested in Cuban history

The Sugar King of Havana by John Paul Rathbone is a must read for Cuban-Americans and everyone interested in Cuban history. I particularly enjoyed reading it because I worked for Mr. Lobo from March 1959 until January 1962 in Havana and in New York. He was a very complex man and at times difficult, but he was brilliant, took a real interest in the lives of those who worked for him, from the highest executive to the field laborers. The book is very well written and gives an accurate picture of the pre-Castro Cuba. Once you start reading it, you can not put it down. I always said that Cuba did not need a revolution, it only needed an honest government. But...apparently this was an unattainable dream. Perhaps, if we had had more Julio Lobo's at the time things would have been different.
