a lot of breadth, little depth

I purchased this book based on excellent reviews on Amazon. I was disappointed. The book covers a lot of material, much of it of little or no interest to most of primary care doctors. For example it describes blepharoplasty and EGD, and a lot of similar procedures that most of PCPs refer to specialists. At the same time most of the procedure descriptions are covered very superficially, providing very few details, and not really useful for someone who is trying to learn procedures. Photos are of very poor quality, and are not helpful. The big drawback for a procedure book is the absence of DVD demonstrating procedures. Considering its huge volume, I decided it is worth the price I paid, and I decided to keep it. But I wish the authors devoted more space to relevant procedures performed by most PCPs and added good quality photos and DVD to help understand procedures.

Good reference book for most outpatient procedures. For primary care physicians it is a very valuable resource. Most of the step by step instructions are described in detailed with pictures. Some procedure descriptions are not covered very detailed, and may not be really useful for someone who is trying to learn procedures. Overall a good book

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, translated and introduced by Gregory Hays, by that standard, is very worthwhile, indeed. Hays suggests that its most recent incarnation--as a self-help book--is not only valid, but may be close to the author's intent. The book, which Hays calls, fondly, a "haphazard set of notes," is indicative of the role of philosophy among the ancients in that it is "expected to provide a 'design for living.'" And it does, both aphoristically ("Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.") and rhetorically ("What is it in ourselves that we should prize?"). Whether these, and other entries ("Enough of this wretched, whining monkey life.") sound life-changing or like entries in a teenager's diary is up to the individual reader, as it should be. Hays's introduction, which sketches the life of Marcus Aurelius (emperor of Rome A.D. 161-180) as well as the basic tenets of stoicism, is accessible and jaunty. --H. O'Billovich

A word of caution

Amazon lumps different translations together as merely variations on how the book is delivered. In this case, the Hays translation is the hardcover, while the authors who translated the paperback and Kindle versions aren't specified. So use the tools available (look inside, free sample) to get an idea of the language used by the author and see if it's something you'd like to read, or if a different translation suits you better.

It's worth trying different translations

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:

This version:

Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.

George Long's version:

From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.

Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard, accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”

Before I get into details, I must say that reading Meditations was one of the hardest, but most rewarding experiences in my own personal growth. The book has done so much to ferment my prior beliefs and has helped a lot to broaden my mind and encourage me to be all that I can be.

It is very difficult in today’s world to believe in anything, whether it be divine beings, other people, or even ourselves. It is an epidemic that buries potential and love deep down and leaves anger and frustration to dictate life.

There is no reason to feel unhappy, unfulfilled, or unappreciated , and Meditations by Marcus Aurelius offers advice to anyone who is looking for self help, self love, and a rational way of directing life.

Before reading this book it is interesting to know the man that wrote it. Marcus Aurelius was the last of The Five Good Emperors of Ancient Rome. He took the title of Augustus after the death of his adopted father, Antoninus Pius, the adopted son of the late Emperor Hadrian.

However Marcus Aurelius had tried to pass on the emperorship, for he prefered a much more simple philosophic lifestyle. He accepted the honor with the sole demand that Lucius Verus, his adopted brother, would share the seat with him.

Sharing his seat of power is the one move that summarizes Marcus Aurelius’s entire life; the fear of power and the duty embedded in him through his interest in Stoicism, a philosophy that grounds itself on self-restraint, reason, and fate.

His work is a reflection of his life, and the words inscribed in Meditations are the product of his own thoughts and his own experiences. While reading this book good feelings will begin to surface through introspection, and in turn bad feelings will be expelled.

In my everyday life quotes from his book swim in my mind when I am met with difficult situations, and they enable me to make smarter more thought out and rational decisions. It is fascinating and rewarding each time I don’t simply act on impulse.

This book is not for entertainment, not for adventure, and it is definitely not a “light read.” It is a book that will help those who seek help, irritate those who don’t, and fascinate those who wish to learn and grow.

A fitting tribute to one of the greatest thinkers of all time

Anyone who has taken a course in macroeconomics knows who Keynes is. Economics is full of camps, conflicting doctrines, feuds, rivalries, etc. Keynes was unique in that, unlike other economists who are indoctrinated or are in love with a theory, he was never scared of giving up an idea that did not work. If one was to read his "Tract on Monetary Reform" one might be fooled into thinking that it was Milton Friedman that was writing and not the J.M Keynes who revolutionized economic thought with his General Theory. This pragmatism is what sets Keynes apart from every other economist. But why Keynes was so different from others is something students never learn. This biography does an admirable job of tracing Keynes' upbringing, his education, career, and contributions in the light of circumstances that Keynes lived through and shaped his ideas. It is also full of nuggets about Keynes' idiosyncracies which humanizes the biography and shows the real person behind the aura. The book is long, but 63 years of action-packed life requires such detail. The Chinese say, May we live in interesting times. Keynes certainly lived in interesting times with the result that this book is just as interesting.

Serviceable

This is what you might call a nice, workman-like march through the life of JM Keynes. It was a valuable read for me because I learned and re-learned a good bit about events on the world stage from about 1910 through Keynes's death just after WWII. I also got a tangential refresher on Bloomsbury.
As to economic theory, I didn't learn much. Not at all because I was already up on Keynes and demand management and such. No, Skidelsky is not a professional economist- he does not spend his days at the university commons or the IMF cafeteria, chewing over the fundamental ideas of economic theory. So it just hasn't sunk into his bones so deeply that he can easily state the basics in clear, complete and simple terms. Of course, this may chalk up to my shortcomings as a reader, but I was motivated and re-read carefully, and quite frankly the mumbo jumbo didn't always add up.
Also, Skidelsky does spend much time thinking about Keyne's sexuality. Maybe that is a wise professional choice in that it would have required a lot of ethereal philosophising. Still, during his youth, Keynes was a committed and in many ways open homosexual. Next thing you know he marries a woman and lives happily with her for the next 20 plus years. It points up some fascinating questions about the range of human sexuality and its biological and social determinants. Skidelsky doesn't really ask them. Too bad. I mean, I ive in 2016 America when so many people easily accept the humanity of gay people, and so many others are uncomfortable with homosexuality, and so much is in flux. It would have been pretty timely but Skidelsky stays on the surface.

A Major Force with Enduring Influence

In this, the third and concluding volume of his biography of Keynes, Skidelsky offers a brilliant analysis of one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Skidelsky offers a remarkable discussion of the man (as opposed to the icon) whose influence seems to have fluctuated according to conventional (received?) wisdom with regard to fundamental economic principles. Economists have either agreed or disagreed about the value of Keynes's ideas (often with more heat than light) since the publication of his major work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money (1936). As a non-economist, I have only casually observed how his principles have gone in and out of favor as the national economy itself improves, flattens out, weakens, improves, etc. I enjoyed this book because it connected a human being with the principles to which so many others have referred in books and articles. Also because, as international trade accelerates in terms of both scope and depth (largely because of the Internet and the WWW), the role of government in each country will inevitably change...especially governments in those countries which were formerly members of the U.S.S.R. as well as in other countries in Asia, notably China. Thanks to Skidelsky's book, I am now much better prepared to recognize and understand such changes. I wish I had read the second volume in the trilogy (subtitled "The Economist as Savior") before reading this one. Those who read this review are urged to do so. However, judged wholly on its own merits, this final volume (subtitled "Fighting for Freedom") is a first-rate achievement.

Sophomoric Collection Of The Unexplained

This is a collection of edited snippets from 19th century and early 20th century newspapers out of the Yukon and Alaska, setting forth unsubstantiated stories of lost mines, mysterious tribes, living mammoths,hidden valleys, and other various anomalies from those regions. The author makes no attempt to comment on the veracity of any of the stories, some of which have been commented upon in more detail in other more comprehensive books dealing with similar controversial or unexplained phenomena and the like. It's a quick and mildly entertaining read, but those who require more details and substance to such intriguing mysteries should look elsewhere.

intimacy and communication

I ordered this book yesterday and after trial and error on my part, finally was able to get it downloaded. The book is wonderful! The questions are good, honest and thought provoking. I really liked the fact that the author is living the same life so she knows firsthand what it's like to be a prison wife. We have 15 years left and I have been wondering how we will keep things alive during that time. I figure this journal will take about a year to complete. We are going to make a question our "date" each day together at the same time and then send home our homework. I think the book is a small investment with a very large return .... Your marriage.

Learning Experience

I received this journal from a friend right after my husband was incarcerated. I have learned a great deal from it. We work on it together and it helps us both understanding eachother. I has helped us to grow in love and respect of the others feeling and what the other is going thru. I highly recommend this journal to all women/men with incarcerated spouses.
