It is one of the best books for undergrad students. It does not have a lot of complicated math equations like many books on polymer processing does. It goes straight to the point. I hope you like it.

It's first time I am not raving about Eric Kayser book. Previous books I purchased were not bread books though. But Eric Kayser is a baker first and foremost. I tried his breads when I visited France. They were really amazing. So when I heard his bread book is going to be out, I couldn't wait to get my hands on his recipes. Alas, was I disappointed! To begin with, I've been baking breads with natural levain for a number of years. I know from experience that both starter hydration and temperature schedule are very important if one wants to produce flavorful and healthy starter, not just the one that tastes one dimensionally sour. Well, Eric keeps his baking secret to himself. The sourdough starter recipe in the book comes to about 100% hydration. In the videos widely available one can see that his starter pours like a liquid pancake batter. So that's the first red flag for you! Then, he states that temperature is very important for developing flavorful starter but... he stops there and does not divulge the secret of his levain. I understand, it's his business, and there are professional secrets, etc. etc. Don't write the book then, man! In short, if you think that by following his recipes you'll be able to produce baguettes that look like his (p.66) with nice crackling crust and big irregular holes, don't hold your breath. You won't because his recipe produces a high density bread that I would never call a baguette. There are bakers who share their secrets and love doing so. To name just a couple, Chad Robertson (Tartine Bread) and Jeffrey Hamelman (Bread: A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes). For more advanced bakers there is also an excellent Advanced Bread and Pastry by Michael Suas but it's a lot more expensive and mostly geared toward professionals.I
learned a lot from those famous bakers. I was hoping to add new recipes to my collection when I purchased Eric Kayser's book. It turned out to be complete disappointment.

"The Technique of Islamic Bookbinding" is the first monograph dedicated to the technical development of the bookbinding tradition in the Islamic world. Based on an assessment of the extensive oriental collections in the Leiden University Library, the various sewing techniques, constructions and the application of covering materials are described in great detail. A comparative analysis of the historic treatises on bookbinding provides further insight into the actual making of the Islamic book. In addition, it is demonstrated that variations in time and place can be established with the help of distinctive material characteristics. Karin Scheper s work refutes the current perception of Islamic bookbinding as a weak structure, which has generally but erroneously been typified as a case-binding. Instead, the author argues how diverse methods were used to create sound structures, thus fundamentally challenging our understanding of the Islamic bookbinding practice."

Utopias

Shakers, Rappites, and Zoarites were joined by new religious communities in the nineteenth century such as Hopedale, Oneida, Amana, Bishop Hill, and Bethel-Aurora. Ephrata was a celibate settlement. The brotherhood was not bound by a written document. Life at Ephrata was austere.

Shaker theology is unique. Shakers rejected the doctrine of the trinity. Mother Ann Lee had worked several miraculous cures. Initiates to the order had junior status in the beginning. Converts were recruited from the religious revivals. Furnishings were plain and simple. Every Shaker building had the air of a chapel. The Shakers were credited with various inventions. Revivalism exerted an influence in American communities.

The Rappites, followers of George Rapp, six hundred in number, came to America in 1804. They were Lutherans. The community was moved three times. The dissolution of Zoar took place in 1898. Zoarites were also German and renegade Lutherans whose main amusements were musical. Dancing was prohibited. The members of Zoar did not show the fanatical zeal of the Pietists and the Shakers.

Robert Owen and his followers settled in the Rappite village of New Harmony. A new Owenite community was established at Yellow Springs, Ohio. By 1830 the Owenite communities ceased to exist. Oneida had a system of complex marriage. Adin Ballou founded the Hopedale Community. The Northampton Association was cooperative, not communistic. Brook Farm had an idyllic setting near the Charles River. In 1843 Albert Brisbane started the Phalanx. Amana is a product of the Pietist Movement.

Life the universe and everything revealed by watermarks

A weird, wonderful and cranky book. The author advises you to skip the first few chapters because they are a bit obsessive and not very interesting to most people (they are actually fascinating, but it's great to see modesty in an author). The symbolic meaning of watermarks is explained, but that's just the start, soon the book gets in full swing going off on fascinating tangents left right and centre. Ancient myths, the masons, rosicrucians & templars .Lots of highly speculative etymology of words like "cucumber" (translated as "mighty-fire-father" if I remember right). Smashing stuff. Read it and be confused

A WONDERFUL AND DELIGHTFUL BOOK IF READ WITH AN OPEN AND QUESTIONING MIND.

This onetime popular (Some might call it a landmark work) tome by Harold Bayley was first published in 1912 and has gone through several publications since that time. This 2006 Dover publication is an exact and unabridged one-volume republication of Volumes I and II of the original work which was published in England.

There are a couple of items that need to be noted before a person reads or, more importantly, purchases this work. There has been some confusion over the past several years as to the author. The author of this work is Harold Bayley. It is NOT Harold Walter Bailey the noted English scholar, linguist and one of the greatest Orientalists of the twentieth century. Doctor Bailey died in 1996. Both men published a book with a very similar title....double check the author's name before you make your purchase.

Our Harold Bayley, the author of this book, was, as another reviewer has pointed out, a rather eccentric Englishman; an amateur, granted a well educated one, but simply did not have all of the academic credentials or background of Bailey. I am not sure why, but I have run across several discussions and reviews where these two men have been mixed up.

It should also be noted that when reading this work, it is most helpful to have some previous knowledge of the subject. Some of the statements this author makes, some of his assertions, some of his "facts" can best and most kindly be described as imaginative. Folks, I simply do not know where some of this man's statements came from or what is thought process was in coming to many of his conclusions.

But all that being said....

I do love this work. It can be used by either reading right through it, cover to cover, or it can be used as a reference book for research. As a matter of fact the only reason I laid my hands on it to begin with was that I was very interested in what the author had to say about the age old story of Cinderella. After reading this section I was hooked.

Bayley covers a lot of ground in this work from the origins of Santa Claus to Cinderella and how symbolism has played a role in fairy tales, religion, mythology and folklore. It explains why we are still influenced by it to this very day.

This work is accompanied by more than 1,400 illustrations, from the very primitive to the extremely sophisticated. It should be noted that the portion of this book which is in fact volume II of the original delves into the sacred and mystic world.

The author can be cranky and funny; all in the same paragraph. He is extremely exact and the work is very well footnoted.

Now don't take me wrong. I am not putting this work down...not in the least. A reader will glean much good information from its pages and most certainly will be given a great amount of food for though. I will say though that the reader must consider the source and not take everything the author has said as gospel or written in stone. I am giving this one five stars not because it is the beginning and end of all books covering this subject, but because it is an absolute hoot to read and just chucked full of interesting bits of this and that and I highly recommend its reading if you are interested in such matters.

Harold Bayley's work will imortalize this scholar. His global linking of myth, legend and fact is a milestone. This wreat work was written long before the word "diffusion" was outlawed from scholarly endevour. Bayley correctly points out the global scale and diffusion of myth, legend tales and symbolism. The sections concerning Lugh, Hu, Stonehenge and Avebury are must reading for every scholar of the ancients.
