About the Author
Jim Walker holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Washington. He served as a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of San Diego.�In recognition of his contributions to the teaching of physics, Jim was named the Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science and Mathematics Education for 2001-2003.�He currently teaches at Western Washington University.

Not helpful for students who do not easily and quickly grasp physics.

This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever used. The example problems are very confusing. They do not reference material from earlier chapters so it's easy to get lost in the reasoning behind solving the problem. The actual chapters themselves do very little to explain physics to someone who doesn't easily grasp it. The end of chapter problems also expect you to be gifted in theoretical physics rather than providing building blocks and stepping stones to truly comprehending the material.

Physics textbook with generally clear explanations and relevant real-world applications- much better than Giancoli's text

As a post-bac student at a local public university, I found this text very helpful in understanding the principles and developing my problem-solving techniques in the second-semester of the algebra-based physics sequence. We had reading quizzes, so I read every chapter that corresponded to the course (chapters 16-30) and thus have much familiarity with the textbook. Walker generally presented clear, in-depth explanations for non-physics majors and provided a variety of worked example problems throughout each chapter. Some reviewers complained that he does not provide enough worked-examples, but you can't expect the author to show how to do every single type of physics problem encountered- the book would be too cumbersome and would defeat the problem-solving nature of physics.

What I appreciated most, however, were the multitude of real-world applications interwoven throughout each chapter. The author eloquently connected the concepts presented to a diverse array of real-world objects and phenomena, such as bimetallic strips (heat), countercurrent exchange in the body (conduction), diesel engines (thermodynamics), printers (electrostatics), keyboards (capacitance), credit card readers (magnetic flux), rainbows (light), CD players (interference), just to name a few. This motivated me tremendously to learn the material, as I realized that all of it relates to our everyday life.

I also found the chapter summaries and conceptual questions at the end of each chapter valuable for testing my understanding. Our class required Mastering Physics, which is an online platform that assigned the same problems as those at the end of each chapter. Walker provided a large variety of problems of easy, medium, and hard difficulty (indicated by the number of dots next to each problem), and doing a large variety of problems was absolutely crucial with developing my confidence in the material. Some of the problems were quite fun, as they related the physics principle to an everyday application. There were some mediocre problems in each chapter, but in my opinion, these were few and far between.

The only issue I had with this text was that some of the sections were not clearly written and thus presented formulas and examples in a confusing way, such as chapter 28 regarding interference. Overall though, I found this text much superior to Giancoli's algebra-based text that I used in AP Physics B in high school; Walker's text gave more concise explanations, more worked-out examples, more diagrams/figures to illustrate the concepts, better homework problems, and more real-world applications. It also appears to be better than Cutnell and Johnson's text too. I highly recommend this text for an introductory physics course and for developing an appreciation of physics that is constantly at work in our daily lives.

The best Physics text I've ever had.

I'm a Physics major, and, although this is an algebra-based book, I still learned the most from this. It is the first Physics book I reach for when something needs clarification or I need to look up a formula. Walker's illustrations and explanations are clear and concise (with a few exceptions), and he covers almost every topic in Physics.

About the Author
Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988) earned a BS from MIT and a PhD from Princeton. From 1942 to 1945, he assisted with the development of the atomic bomb. He then taught at Cornell and Caltech, where he contributed to the theories of superfluidity and quarks. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics for work on the theory of quantum electrodynamics.

"Surely You're Joking" is well presented but "What Do You Care" presentation lacks passion and feels like the narrator just "phoned it In". Feynman deserves better. His is a great story of how to teach. Was Feynman Flawed? Yes, but a rare individual who can teach us all a lesson in passion. Too bad the narrator didn't get the message.

A genius, an artist, a musician and a safecracker....

I generally do not like to have anything read to me aloud. First of all, I tend to drift off to sleep, and, second I can't put a marker in someone's mouth and return a few hours later and have them begin again where we had left.

This audio book on CD was different. The narrator is so much fun to listen to you could swear it was the author himself reading his stories. This is an autobiography that is composed mainly of short stories and glimpses into the life of Richard Feynman, one of the minds behind the atom bomb.

His genius was quite evident as he was growing up; at a very early age he began repairing radios. First as a personal challenge and hobby, then as a way to earn a few bucks. At one point in his early career he needed some testing equipment to measure electrical resistance. He could not afford to buy the equipment so he made his own. The remarkable thing about this is he was about 10 years old when he built the testing equipment!

From his days at Los Alamos (his fame as a safecracker started here), his artistic time (you won't believe where he spent most of that time!) to the loss of his beloved first wife this book was an inspiration. I want to be just like Richard Feynman in my next life!

You should be able to pick this up at a garage sale or used book bin at finer book stores. Treat yourself to a great "read"! I have decided that it is nice to have someone else do the work for you.

Have you ever wondered what goes in inside the mind of a Nobel laureate?

An utterly delightful pair of books.

Raymond Todd reads Mr. Feynman's words with feeling and humor. "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" is a quirky self portrait of a brilliant man. The companion book, "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" is an intimate and touching chronicle focusing, in large part, on the author's first marriage to his childhood sweetheart and his time serving on the Roger's Commission investigating the 1986 Challenger Space Shuttle disaster.

Although many of the stories stem from Mr. Feynman's deep love of science, these are not books about science. Far from it...

I highly recommend this box set and plan to listen again soon for the pure pleasure of it.

It is one of the best books for undergrad students. It does not have a lot of complicated math equations like many books on polymer processing does. It goes straight to the point. I hope you like it.

It's first time I am not raving about Eric Kayser book. Previous books I purchased were not bread books though. But Eric Kayser is a baker first and foremost. I tried his breads when I visited France. They were really amazing. So when I heard his bread book is going to be out, I couldn't wait to get my hands on his recipes. Alas, was I disappointed! To begin with, I've been baking breads with natural levain for a number of years. I know from experience that both starter hydration and temperature schedule are very important if one wants to produce flavorful and healthy starter, not just the one that tastes one dimensionally sour. Well, Eric keeps his baking secret to himself. The sourdough starter recipe in the book comes to about 100% hydration. In the videos widely available one can see that his starter pours like a liquid pancake batter. So that's the first red flag for you! Then, he states that temperature is very important for developing flavorful starter but... he stops there and does not divulge the secret of his levain. I understand, it's his business, and there are professional secrets, etc. etc. Don't write the book then, man! In short, if you think that by following his recipes you'll be able to produce baguettes that look like his (p.66) with nice crackling crust and big irregular holes, don't hold your breath. You won't because his recipe produces a high density bread that I would never call a baguette. There are bakers who share their secrets and love doing so. To name just a couple, Chad Robertson (Tartine Bread) and Jeffrey Hamelman (Bread: A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes). For more advanced bakers there is also an excellent Advanced Bread and Pastry by Michael Suas but it's a lot more expensive and mostly geared toward professionals.I
learned a lot from those famous bakers. I was hoping to add new recipes to my collection when I purchased Eric Kayser's book. It turned out to be complete disappointment.
