About the Author

Massimiliano Gioni is Edlis Neeson Artistic Director at the New Museum, New York, and Director at Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan. He was curator of the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), the 8th Gwangju Biennial (2010) and, together with Ali Subotnick and Maurizio Cattelan, the 4th Berlin Biennale (2006). His publications include contributions to Phaidon's Maurizio Cattelan (2003), Ice Cream (2007), Unmonumental (2007), Defining Contemporary Art (2012), Paul McCarthy, Revised and Expanded Edition (2016), Anri Sala: Answer Me (2016) and Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest (2016).

Gary Carrion-Murayari is a curator at the New Museum, where he has curated solo exhibitions for Phyllida Barlow, Ellen Gallagher, Haroon Mirza, Camille Henrot, and Jim Shaw, among others, and has co-curated exhibitions including "Ghosts in the Machine," "NYC 1993," "Here and Elsewhere," and "Chris Ofili: Night and Day." Murayari previously worked at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where he organized solo presentations of work by Elad Lassry and Karthik Pandian, and co-curated a number of group exhibitions. Carrion-Murayari was the co-curator, with Francesco Bonami, of the 2010 Whitney Biennial.

Terrible customer service

Hpynobabies staff is rude and not helpful at all. I purchased the study course for my wife with our first baby. She enjoyed it but we misplaced one of the CD's. I called to see if there was any way we could get a copy of the one disc and the staff was rude and told me I had no choice but to buy another set. They gave me attitude as well. Go with a different course!!!!

Great Book

Totem Magic: Dance of the Shapeshifter by Yasmine Galenorn was a very interesting book to say the least. I really liked this book. This book give a very interesting viewpoint ob totem animals, spirit guides, and other animal entries and energies. Not only does the book give the read ways to find their animal totems and spirits, the book also give various practices and ways that they can be worked into spells and magic workings. One every interesting and, in my view, great thing about this book is that it does not say what an animal means or symbolizes and leaves that up to the read to find out for themselves. This book goes into how one might develop a relationship with their own totem or guide and learn for themselves what their own symbolism, which I found to be wonderful. I found this book to be genuinely fascinating and one that was really a pleasure to read.

Good Foundation but a little far fetched

I have been practicing for many years and bought this book as a recommendation from a friend. She was right on many accounts - this book has an excellent foundation on how to relate to totem animals of all types. It does a wonderful job of describing totem dancing, and the many different ways to connect with your totem. The writer also writes in bits and pieces of personal lore which brings the concepts to life and makes you more able to relate to them.

The big red flag went up for me at the start of the book - probably within the first 3 chapters, where the author says that to better communicate with her panther spirit she eats raw meat to more fully experience the totem. I guess this just screamed fluffy to me. You can learn a lot from your totem animals, and you can even at times, become one with them through shape-shifting and many other means. However, you remain you - a human. No matter how much meditation you do, you will not physically become the totem and I feel that this idea that you should replicate every physical aspect of your totem is dangerous and can lead unstable people to do some most unwise things. She went one to describe dancing her totem with a friend, where she pulled a knife on her friend because that is what the totem would have done. Whoa!

Becoming one with your totem in the spiritual, ethereal and Astral is real is completely possible - although it takes quite some time to learn. This is a healthy practice that can bring you and your totem closer and can bring you new perspectives and a wealth of knowledge. Taking this too far can lead to some serious problems both in the real world and in the spiritual world. You can commune with your totem but at the end of the day, you are still a human - which is a part of your spirituality that is just as important as being with your totem and should not be forgotten.

This book has good concepts but I think she takes it too far. I would say that for beginners, take what is said here with a grain of salt.

Thoughtful and well-written!

The author shares some wonderful personal gnosis with readers who are tired of getting history lessons over and over from were-books. You also won't find a lot of "if you're this animal it means this", which is appreciated. Not a lot of filler content here, just some good facts and personal observations.

I also appreciate that there wasn't a bias against certain weres, like the coyote one I come across over and over in books on the subject.

About the Author
Danny L. Jorgensen is Professor (and former Chair) of Religious Studies at the University of South Florida, Tampa, where he has been employed since 1978 (initially in sociology until 1991). His academic training and degrees are in sociology: B.S., Northern Arizona University, 1972; M.A. Western Kentucky University, 1974; and The Ohio State University, 1979. Jorgensen's teaching and research is in the areas of participant observation, ethnography, and qualitative research; the sociology of religion; and new religions in America, including Mormonism, Neopaganism and Witchcraft, Scientology, and Old Order Anabaptists (Amish, Mennonites, Hutterites, and Brethren). He is the author of several books, edited books, and an extensive array of book chapters and journal articles, many of them based on participant observation and other qualitative, ethnographic methods in these areas. He and spouse, June, reside part of the year in Tampa and part of the year near Lebanon, in southern Missouri, on a hundred acre horse farm.

A Guide To Get Started

Jorgensen is clear in his purpose for writing this book. It is to give people an introduction to the methodology of partcipant observation. He explains how the process works and gives examples to support his explanation. In the first chapter he identifies situations when the method would be appropriate: 1)little known about the phenomenon 2) different viewers between insiders and outsiders 3) outsiders having an obscured view 4) phenomenon hidden from public view. In arguing for the validity of what is discovered by researchers using the method, he writes it "aims to provide practical and theoretical truths about human experience" (p. 16). In my own graduate work I found this book to be helpful and recommend it to others interested in the field

About the Author
Dr. Cynthia Crosson-Tower is a national expert on child abuse and neglect and the author of numerous books and publications including Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect, Exploring Child Welfare: A Practice Perspective, When Children Are Abused: An Educator’s Guide to Intervention, A Clergy Guide to Child Abuse and Neglect and How Schools Can Combat Child Abuse and Neglect. Dr. Crosson-Tower taught in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts for 24 years, also founding and serving as the Director of the Child Protection Institute there. She maintains a private practice, Harvest Counseling and Consultation, specializing in the treatment of survivors of abuse and perpetrators of sexual abuse. Dr. Crosson-Tower served on the subcommittee to develop protocol for the Cardinal’s Commission of the Archdiocese of Boston and became a part of the Implementation and Oversight Committee of the Archdiocese’s Office of Child Advocacy.
