About the Author
David Krogh has been writing about science for 27 years in newspapers, magazines, books, and for educational institutions. He is the author of Smoking: The Artificial Passion, an account of the pharmacological and cultural motivations behind the use of tobacco, which was nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science and Technology. In 1994, he began work on what would become Biology: A Guide to the Natural World, and in 1999 he completed its first edition. Since then, he has produced three more editions of A Guide to the Natural World along with a second textbook, A Brief Guide to Biology. He holds bachelor’s degrees in journalism and history from the University of Missouri.

A bit oversimplified, but overall a great book for those who want their first intro to Biology to include "mental lube".

Overall I think this book is suitable for the average person who is taking an entry-level Biology class. It is written in such a way where it makes potentially complicated subjects easier to understand, but unfortunately this is also where its weakness lies. To give you an example, When our class was studying chlorophyll/cellular respiration the diagrams were oversimplified to the point where our professor had to give her own diagram to the class, so I had to dock one star for that bit.
I wanted to detract .5 of a star for personal taste (I prefer a more technical approach to the sciences with less fluff, which this book wasn't meant for that kind of student or professor), but it didn't seem fair to give this book an even lower score when the author really tries to get the average person interested in Biology. It is also important to note that I haven't went through the entire book (since my summer class does not cover all chapters).
Overall, I's a decent book that deserves a pollice verso in the upward position.

As much as I hated taking this course

As much as I hated taking this course, I found the book to be an extremely helpful tool. I like that the authors use lots of diagrams and analogies to help students understand the concepts. I'm the type of person who likes to have something explained to me in very simple terms first, and then learn the details afterwards, and this book presents information that way. Of course, all courses and students are different, but for me, I exclusively studied the book (didn't even attend lecture) and still ended up with a high B.

Does the job.

But, I was under the impression that the book I purchased was the 3rd student edition. Instead I got the second teachers edition. I was initially going to return it, but luckily it has all the information I need so far, but I do recommend checking very closely what edition the seller is selling and making sure it is the edition you receive. Not every one is able to improvise with older texts and some teachers require certain editions. Overall good book. It is in good condition. Came in a decent amount time time.
