Identical to the 3rd edition but so much cheaper.

I was supposed to purchase the 3rd edition but the prof. was lenient about it and said that students could buy the older 2nd version. At the time, the 3rd edition was sold for $150 and I bought this 2nd edition used for about $25. Anyways, for those wondering if there is a huge difference in the materials covered between the books, there are not. The 2nd edition is basically identical to the 3rd edition. Practice problems, examples, and chapter contents are the same. If you're a student looking to save some major cash buy the older edition. Why shell out hundreds of dollars to buy a book that you'll only be using for a semester.

Not as i expected it to be!

Not much math as I expected it would be. A lot of reading and words. The facts in it are very interesting, but I don't think this book is worth the price I brought it for (100 bucks). I seriously hope there are better Life Science Statistic books than this one!!

Teachers please stop using this book!

In my long history of being a student I'm pretty sure I've never written a review about a textbook since you can't choose your books- it really doesn't matter if it's bad because you're stuck with it anyway. But I'll make an exception to this monstrosity, in the hopes that future instructors will read these reviews and understand that as a self-taught course, this book is simply AWFUL. I'm a scientist, so obviously statistics are near and dear to not only my heart, but my paycheck and reputation as well. Therefore, I not only wanted to get a decent grade, but I truly needed to know this stuff. Unfortunately, this book served me more as a mouse pad than as an instruction manual.
It gives all the formulas, the rules, the definitions, etc., yet somehow it doesn't teach a dang thing. The explanations, the instruction, or even the examples you're given to actually learn the statistics are woefully inadequate and sparse. There is no teacher here, just you and the book, so it should be doing a complete job in teaching, not supplementing some unknown professor. I spent more time doing online searches to understand the material than I did learning from the book.
Here are things you need to know about this book/online portal:
**I cannot stress this enough- you have to know how to use excel and/or the TI-83/4 calculator stats features BEFORE taking this class. Sure, there are scattered flaccid technology pictures in the book, but they're as helpful as your Aunt Ester who answers the phone when she hears the doorbell.
**The book and the online videos tag-team the teaching, so don't think that just reading or watching will teach you what you need to know. Unfortunately, the video tutor speaks at a fast clip, never hesitating to allow you to answer posed questions, take notes, or even think about what she said. Even worse, she makes simple mistakes like superimposing numbers, causing you to do a double take and miss more fast-paced instruction (she'll say "the result is one point forty-three", yet the number you're staring at says 1.34). There are hardly any answers to the examples, and those that are answered are not explained, so you can never learn from your mistakes. Even worse, some of the online lectures and accompanying videos wouldn't load, so you couldn't view them, losing a whole section of material (and this was a class-wide phenomenon, so don't think it's OS or browser dependent.
**There are errors in answers and non-existent explanations to terms you're supposed to know. For example, upper and lower bounds are not defined and barely mentioned, yet these terms have to be understood in order to get test questions correct.
**Long, drawn out complicated mathematical explanations are given for formulas, and then you're promptly told you don't need to know all that. Yet on the tests, you do.
**The book has no glossary but it does have online errata. What kind of textbook has no glossary but has errata? Oh yeah, a horrible one. (And don't think the errata section fixes what they got wrong- it says, "Coming Soon.")
**The online portal drags at off-peak hours and at most other times it will hang when you save your work, making you sweat as to whether or not your hour of work was entered before the time cutoff. It also wouldn't load some test questions, meaning we couldn't see them, much less answer them. Some students had the tests time out after only a few minutes when they actually had nearly an hour left, giving them a zero for the test. (Better hope your professor is understanding.)
This is an awful book and an awful online portal. There must be no other choices in online stats, because I can't imagine teachers think this is a good teaching tool.
