Cyrus McCormick's invention of the reaper revolutionized farming in North America and western Europe in the 19th century and the McCormick Harvesting Company's marketing of agricultural machinery made it one of the richest firms in America. But, as the company continued to grow and diversify in the 20th century, problems began to emerge: management tended to be rigid and inept in cutting costs; after a background of enmity toward labor, the company did an about-face and signed contracts that granted union workers extremely costly benefits; executives failed to forecast how the cyclical nature of the agricultural machine business might affect sales; the firm became overextended with debts. In the early 1980s, a combination of a recession, surplus farm commodities and a strong U.S. dollar brought disaster. Harvester barely escaped bankruptcy, and now a smaller, leaner, reorganized company is attempting a comeback. Marsh has done a fine job of telling this story, one of great interest beyond the business community. November 8

This is the story of the rise and fall of International Harvester, from 1831, when Cyrus McCormick patented his reaper, to 1985, by which time Harvest er was only in the truck and engine business. The last 10 to 15 years are highlighted, but enough earlier history is given so that the reader can under stand the mistakes that led to the virtual collapse of one of America's largest manufacturers. International's failure was caused by a multitude of factors. Marsh documents these well but pays special attention to how both Harvest er's consultants and the new manage ment misread the cultural and historical relationships within the company. Marsh's book is well-researched and as readable as a novel. Highly recom mended for all business collections. Michael D. Kathman, St. John's Univ. Lib., Collegeville, Minn.

This book is a must read if you are doing ...

This book is a must read if you are doing any kind of corporate strategic planning work. Pay special attention to chapter 6, which compares what IH was doing starting in the 50's to what then distant number 2, John Deere was going about things. Companies that are into manufacturing and who move their executive offices to an ego statement high rise in the middle of a major city and well away from their operations centers are effectively committing corporate suicide, as the day to day lives of the leaders isolate them from the realities of both their internal operations and customers. Boeing executives should read this with particular care, and then get a clue.

Was the tale of demolition of a major Company that I never believed could happen

Having, at one time, many years ago, been an employee of International Harvester Company the tragedy described in this book was unbelievable. This company was a place that many generataions of people worked at during their lifetimes. This writer left after ten years service which in the judgment of those left behind would eventually, in their judgement, turn out to be a serious detriment to my life cycle. Nothing could have been further from their expectations as my lifecycle has evolved. The Internatuional Harvester Company was a company built on qualiy products to meet the need of all levels of specific societies and in the judgment of most Americans would last for many many years The recent history of General Motors was identical in many ways to the ultimate decline of International Harvester ie:- the quality of management is important to Corporate longevity.

A great read for anyone who is interested in what happened to what was once one of America's mighty titans of industry . It starts with how Harvester was founded in the mid 1800's and proceeds to tell the whole story right up to the collapse in the early 1980's . Very interesting book .
