Hilarious but only good for one read

This book is hard to find. I got it as a gag gift for my 13 year old son who is preoccupied with his changing body. Each page is a simple hand drawn creature whose most outstanding feature is its genitalia, which are not particularly offending in nature. We all had a good laugh as my son read it outloud to the rest of the family, then it went in the cupboard and its been there ever since. When you buy this book, you have to consider how much you will pay for a good laugh. If you are looking for pornography, this ain't it. This is more what I would call "boyscout humor". Its would be a great gag gift to pass on.

I bought this book as a gag gift for a bachelorette gift and it was a total hoot. We couldn't stop giggling at the amusing little drawings and clever word puns. All the animals actually drawn really cute and not at all offensive. Makes a perfect little book for such an occasion.

lots of interesting info, easy to read

I bought this book because I had never learned enough about Germany, even though I suffered through two years of German in college.

It provided an excellent overview that was easy to read, yet provided lots of interesting details. For example, we learn that Caesar wrote that Germans spent their whole life in hunting and the practice of war. A few years later, Tacitus reported that the Germans were a “fair-haired, fiercely blue-eyed people who hated peace.” Yet the author points out that by the 20th Century, Germany was the most racially mixed country in Europe, despite the fictions of Aryan purity spread by Wagner, Kaiser William, and Hitler.

The book covers a lot of ground and many personalities and events, including the Roman and Medieval periods, Charlemagne, the Renaissance, and the Holy Roman Empire. The book seemed a little superficial at times, especially when covering the First and Second World Wars, but those events are richly described elsewhere. The book clips along at a good pace and provides much interesting material.

Bismarck – the “Iron Chancellor” and Europe’s foremost statesman at the time – brilliantly united the North German Confederation in the 1860s with the kingdoms of Bavaria, Saxony, and Wurttemberg, as well as five grand duchies, thirteen other duchies and principalities, and the free cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Lubeck.

This new “Second Empire” of Germany was “florid and prosperous… the new-rich nation of Europe, with all the arriviste confidence of wealth and the arrogance bred of insecurity,” observes the author.

The history of Germany reads like a tragic epic whose ending we know, as we watch succeeding generations bring about horrendous cataclysms. With “uncompromising belligerency,” Bismarck brings on the brutal Franco-Prussian War in 1871. His successors as Chancellor continue the tradition, helping to create the Agadir Crisis in Morocco and two wars in the Balkans.
“Each ensuring crisis was like a wave that surged farther and farther up the beach until, at the last moment, it receded,” writes the author. “The haunting fear was of the one wave that would not recede, that would finally engulf the shoreline.”

That disaster came to pass in 1914, a “year fated to destroy dynasties, alter the map of Europe, and usher in the age of violence that is still with us,” notes the author. For many Americans today, World War I seems a terrible accident suddenly brought on by the assassination of a minor duke. But the author makes clear that it was the result of years of growing tension, and of “militarism run stark mad,” as President Wilson’s envoy to fruitless peace talks, Col. Edward House, said.

An excellent book

In my view this is one of the best modern commentaries ever to be published on the Golden Dawn system of magic. I found each of the separate commentaries on the Flying Rolls to be of interest and, notwithstanding
a few minor historical errors in places, mostly to considerably enhance both interest in and knowledge of the individual Rolls themselves. In terms of the Rolls themselves it is also a far more useful volume than the original
publication. The latter had the annoying drawback that it did not contain all the Rolls (i.e. those published by Regardie) and its organisation into distinct subjects was distinctly unhelpful. This new volume, however,
provides all the Rolls together in the order in which they were originally issued which I much prefer. I recommend this book highly and congratulate the various contributors. Tony Fuller.

A very important contribution

The outstanding book collects in one place all of the Flying Rolls, which were instructional papers or lectures from the original Golden Dawn. This alone is a worthwhile contribution, since the Francis X. King edition of the Flying Rolls only contains the papers not already printed in Regardie and even between the two not all are complete and accounted for. Add to this that this volume includes valuable and insightful commentary on every single roll by nearly every major figure in the modern Golden Dawn community! This book has become one of the most important books in my collection.

I have to say I loved this book, and have utmost respect for the knowledge that the commentators and the FR authors have. Several of the commentators I converse with on Golden Dawn forums on Facebook. It would be trite for me to state a concise review, as each and every time I read any of the Flying Rolls and their commentaries, new insights are gained. So therefore, while I recommend this book to any student of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, I would be posting daily to weekly reviews from each insight gained. One of my primary interests was on the Will, to try to analyze that with the effect of Vibration. However, this inevitably leads to another area, purification of the mind body and soul. Well then, where to begin? Read it for yourself, page one is where to begin.

This book is excellent for those who are interested to know how and why people from different cultures usually express their likes and dislikes, compliments and invitations. You will see what to expect and how to interpret the phrases of your foreign friends and colleagues. The author illustrates speech patters and certain words' connotations that we have acquired through our cultural traditions in a simple manner - you don't have to be a linguist to understand her ideas.

I used many examples in my Introduction to Linguistics lectures with the first year students and I think they really enjoyed them.

About the Author
Michael R. Adams is a master mariner, certified STCW instructor, retired U.S. Coast Guard commander, and current member of the Florida Bar. During his two decades in the Coast Guard, he served in the cutters Absecon, Boutwell, Dependable, Midgett, Steadfast, and Ute, progressing from deck watch officer to commanding officer. He also served as navigator of the barque USCGC Eagle. After his Coast Guard service, he spent 11 years as captain of the large oil spill response vessel Delaware Responder with brief intervals as captain of the California Responder, Maine Responder, and Virginia Responder. He has taught STCW courses, including BRM, at locations from Maine to Miami and is author of the book OCEAN STATION (Nor'easter Press, 2010).

Solid but not revolutionary

This book has good information and covers the necessary topics, but I don't think it has anything revolutionary or unique. More information on sleep cycles, watch rotation and the reality of shipboard operations would have been beneficial.

This book is very enlightening! If you ever get a chance to take one of his workshops it's an absolute delight! Robert is an excellent photographer and very knowledgeable of Studio and On-Sight lighting techniques and equipment.

Great instructor

I bought the book after taking a one-day training course from the instructor. Great instructor with a nice approach to classroom teaching, great book. He did seem a little too loyal to one of his sponsors who makes flash accessories, but after all he has to put the kids through school. He left a high-paying job to do what he loves and it shows. Look him up, take his class.
